by RoseChasm When people ask me about my experience studying abroad in India, I always face the same dilemma. How does one convey the contradiction that over the past few months has torn my life apart, and convey it in a single succinct sentence?
India was wonderful," I go with, "but extremely dangerous for women. Part of me dreads the follow-up questions, and part of me hopes for more. I'm torn between believing in the efficacy of truth, and being wary of how much truth people want. Because, how do I describe my three months in the University of Chicago Indian civilizations program when it was half dream, half nightmare? Which half do I give? Do I tell them about our first night in the city of Pune, when we danced in the Ganesha festival, and leave it at that? Or do I go on and tell them how the festival actually stopped when the American women started dancing, so that we looked around to see a circle of men filming our every move? Do I tell them about bargaining at the bazaar for beautiful saris costing a few dollars a piece, and not mention the men who stood watching us, who would push by us, clawing at our breasts and groins? When people compliment me on my Indian sandals, do I talk about the man who stalked me for forty-five minutes after I purchased them, until I yelled in his face in a busy crowd? Do I describe the lovely hotel in Goa when my strongest memory of it was lying hunched in a fetal position, holding a pair of scissors with the door bolted shut, while the staff member of the hotel who had tried to rape my roommate called me over and over, and breathing into the phone? How, I ask, was I supposed to tell these stories at a Christmas party? But how could I talk about anything else when the image of the smiling man who masturbated at me on a bus was more real to me than my friends, my family, or our Christmas tree? All those nice people were asking the questions that demanded answers for which they just weren't prepared.
When I went to India, nearly a year ago, I thought I was prepared. I had been to India before; I was a South Asian Studies major; I spoke some Hindi. I knew that as a white woman I would be seen as a promiscuous being and a sexual prize. I was prepared to follow the University of Chicagos advice to women, to dress conservatively, to not smile in the streets. And I was prepared for the curiosity my red hair, fair skin and blue eyes would arouse. But I wasn't prepared. There was no way to prepare for the eyes, the eyes that every day stared with such entitlement at my body, with no change of expression whether I met their gaze or not. Walking to the fruit seller's or the tailer's I got stares so sharp that they sliced away bits of me piece by piece. I was prepared for my actions to be taken as sex signals; I was not prepared to understand that there were no sex signals, only women's bodies to be taken, or hidden away. I covered up, but I did not hide. And so I was taken, by eye after eye, picture after picture. Who knows how many photos there are of me in India, or on the internet: photos of me walking, cursing, flipping people off. Who knows how many strangers have used my image as pornography, and those of my friends. I deleted my fair share, but it was a drop in the ocean-- I had no chance of taking back everything they took. For three months I lived this way, in a traveller's heaven and a woman's hell. I was stalked, groped, masturbated at; and yet I had adventures beyond my imagination. I hoped that my nightmare would end at the tarmac, but that was just the beginning. Back home Christmas red seemed faded after vermillion, and food tasted spiceless and bland. Friends, and family, and classes, and therapy, and everything at all was so much less real than the pain, the rage that was coursing through my blood, screaming so loud it deafened me to all other sounds. And after months of elation at living in freedom, months of running from the memories breathing down my neck, I woke up on April Fool's Day and found I wanted to be dead. The student counselors diagnosed me with a personality disorder and prescribed me pills I wouldn't take.
After a public breakdown I ended up in a psych ward for two days held against my will, and was released on the condition that I took a "mental leave of absence" from school and went to live with my mother. I thought I had lost my mind; I didn't connect any of it to India-- I had moved on. But then a therapist diagnosed me with PTSD and I realized I hadn't moved a single inch. I had frozen in time. And Id fallen. And Id shattered. But I wasn't the only one, the only woman from my trip to be diagnosed with PTSD, to be forced into a psych ward, to wake up wanting to be dead. And I am not the only woman who is on a mental leave of absence from the University of Chicago for reasons of sexual assault and is unable to take classes. Understanding my pain has helped me own it, if not relieve it. PTSD strikes me as a euphemism, because a syndrome implies a cure. What, may I ask, is the cure for seeing reality, of feeling for three months what its like for one's humanity to be taken away? But I thank God for my experiences in India, and for my disillusionment. Truth is a gift, a burden, and a responsibility. And I mean to share it. This is the story you don't want to hear when you ask me about India. But this is the story you need. SoS

I'm going to train my daughter in multiple arts whether unarmed and armed to the teeth to kill any rapist scum who tries to touch her without her permission. It should be Indian rapists or any other kind who fears her, not the other way around.

True but girls need to be careful everywhere. Rape can even happen with their own relatives much less in a completely different culture and country where the dangers are even greater. It's not PC to say so but I feel sorry for women. The physical power even the most pathetic man has over them is often significant. As I said if I have a daughter I will teach her many no nonsense ways to kill an aggressor but I have no illusion such teaching would guarantee her safety. Men need to understand at all times regardless of the situation they are dealing with someone elses daughter and think how they who feel if someone treated their own daughter in such a way.

There is no where on earth anyone could hide from me if they committed such a crime and even a lesser disrespect would not be good for their health. I don't have a daughter yet but I plan to and already I feel very defensive. I can't imagine what my feelings will be like when it's a reality but chances are I would feel sorry for the nice guy who decides to court her much less someone who were to abuse her in any way shape or form.

I won't deny that such cases happen in India but generalizing the entire country as rapists and degenerates just show's how little you people know of India. In every country there are scumbags who treat women as objects. If you truly want to know about India visit bangalore, mumbai or chennai and see the truth.

Don't let anyone label you. You know who you are. Anyway these horrific rape stories have been in the MSM so this is hardly a fringe thread and any thread that brings attention to abuse against women is good in my book. It has been part of society for as long as history has been recorded but that doesn't make it right. Humanity is capable of social evolution and this is one of the few cases where I completely agree we agree we need to change or at least do everything in our power to promote change.

Yeah umm, after reading that, I tend to find it very hard to believe. Publicly masturbate on her in a public bus? What is this, a Japanese porn? Sure, she might got harrased here and there, but come on, holding scissors, while breathing frantically at phone, with an Indian hotel staff knocking on her door asking her to come out, with her best friend being raped in the other room, that's sounds like something made up straight in coocoo land.

that could be the case, I think the female birth rate, at least in some areas of India is somewhat lower than the male birth rate, due mainly to sex-selective abortions (i.e. if the ultrasound shows a son he gets to live, if the ultrasound shows a daughter she is more likely to be aborted). China is similar in this regard, but even worse because of the one chilld policy.

a lot of Indian families prefer males because traditionally the daughter's family has to pay a significant dowry when the daughter is married. I think the sex-selection abortion rate is lower in parts of India that are more Muslim or Christian than in the most heavily Hindu areas, partially because the dowry tradition isn't as strong there, and partially because Christianity and Islam are opposed to abortion.

This is true. Its rare for me to say something good a bout Islam but their beliefs have not caused the troubling gender imbalance both India and China face. There are 22 million more boys than girls under 15 in India and 17 million in China. To put that in perspective there are only 37 million girls in the entire EU and 31 million in the US in total under the age of 15, that's not in deficit but in total. That's how big the deficit is in those nations. Numbers are in the link below, click on the relevant nation to find relevant numbers.

So the imbalance is actually bigger in India than China? As far as Islam goes I think women in Arabia where better off after that area became Muslim than they were in the pagan days, because Islam limited the husband's ability to abandon a wife and banned infanticide. A lot of the Taliban practices like keeping women in the house or covering them so much I think were things that were derived from the culture of the India, Pakistan area rather than being actual Muslim beliefs.

You people know absolutely nothing about India.Where the hell is Indz when you need him? On topic though dressing modestly and covering is prevalent not just in muslim community in India but also in hindu communities.People used to cover up long before Islam came to India. An example of this is the Marwari community of Rajasthan in which women to this day veil themselves.

If you cant even spell schizophrenic, youre definitely not qualified to diagnose one as such. Nooo. Anyway. This stuff happens to women who stay in India and the paler they are, the worse it is. The sexual repression in the Middle-East and South Asia in general is absolutely INSANE and it manifests itself in the ugliest ways. I went to a university where a lot of people studied Asian languages and nearly every white girl who got back from their year abroad in Egypt/Syria whatever just had this look of what the f**k did I choose this subject for? I could never live there. Plenty of horror stories to go around. Its amazing how Indians constantly try to defend their country but so much is indefensible and you cant ignore the mountains of anecdotal evidence. In conclusion, I most definitely would not let my daughter go there.

I won't deny that such cases happen in India but generalizing the entire country as rapists and degenerates just show's how little you people know of India. In every country there are scumbags who treat women as objects. If you truly want to know about India visit bangalore, mumbai or chennai and see the truth.T-Bone91
Erm ok? So visiting Bangalore or Chennai will suddenly make it all so different? Riiight [QUOTE="T-Bone91"] America has MUCH higher reported* rape rate so i guess they should stay away from America

Fixed.

damn, I'd hate to see her reaction if she was actually raped.

I've heard stories from Indian friends I know, but damn...nothing that bad.  No wonder there are so many Indians in the US and UK, I'd want to get the hell out of India too lol.

Yeah umm, after reading that, I tend to find it very hard to believe. Victorious_Fize

Yep. And the fact that CNN is publishing unsubstantiated op-ed pieces by random internet users shows just how shitty journalism has become in this country. Then again CNN never has been a bastion of great journalism.

hahaha did you see all those paragraphs before the article begins? "We CANNOT verify this, we didn't do anything, people contacted this and that, we just don't know, and we walk out of whatever happens below" It's like they weren't prepared for this. lol

[QUOTE="JustBeYourself"][QUOTE="T-Bone91"] [QUOTE="DaBrainz"] Lol, you clearly don't know many women who've been to the middle-east or India. And you definitely haven't been there to witness what goes on yourself. [QUOTE="Victorious_Fize"]Yeah umm, after reading that, I tend to find it very hard to believe.

Theres over a billion people in India. Coocoo sh*t happens every day.

She sounds schizofrenic. But, yeah, it's a really shitty part in the world to be in. People should be aware before taking a white guilty cleansing trip.

Masculus
If you cant even spell schizophrenic, youre definitely not qualified to diagnose one as such. Nooo. Anyway. This stuff happens to women who stay in India and the paler they are, the worse it is. The sexual repression in the Middle-East and South Asia in general is absolutely INSANE and it manifests itself in the ugliest ways. I went to a university where a lot of people studied Asian languages and nearly every white girl who got back from their year abroad in Egypt/Syria whatever just had this look of what the f**k did I choose this subject for? Deep Space 9 was my favorite but Voyager definitely had it's moments, that being one of them! And guys, are some of you really suspecting her of making it up! LOL, the optimism is alive and well then. The exact sh*t she just described happens OFTEN in those countries, it isn't hard to believe if you actually had some experience beyond stepping outside your front door to get an amazon package.

Also this:

Everything you see on iReport starts with someone in the CNN audience. The stories here are not edited fact-checked or screened before they post.

"We'll just let anyone post whatever bullshit they want. We won't check it out or anything, but we'll post it like it's real actual news. Because....f*ck it, whatever..."

LOL, that actually made me laugh.

explain to me how I am a bigot?

Pretty much every thing you post is insulting, demeaning or just generally looking down on other cultures and ethnic groups that aren't your own.

I'm not a bigot

Yeah live in that fantasy. Its like how every criminal thinks he isn't guilty

I know you hate Indians but by god you go out of your way to make everyone hate Indians as well by pulling out such biased crap. Every country has some dark moments or dark kept secrets. Once upon a time a man committed atrocious acts against humanities because he believed Aryan race was superior; and few of his countrymen supported him which led to a bad name to entire country. Now everyone learns that not every German was a bad person and decide to give them another chance and now country is famous for its beer and automobiles over Hitler

Yes there are few bad seeds in India doesn't mean they are all rapists out there. Reality in India isn't like one portrayed in a Latvian joke. If that chick had gone to a decent hotel which she probably could afford then she would had found decent people who would treat her with respect. I have been to Goa and I know how its down there. She was probably stuck in some cheap seedy hotel, loaded up on booze and drugs from some rave party those foreigners love to create at beaches.

I am not saying people weren't at fault there but she isn't being completely honest there either I can say that for sure. Its like me going down to Detroit getting robbed and beat up and then I end up visualizing all Americans including Obama, Bill Nye the Science guy, Stephen Colbert and everyone as a thug just because I had a traumatic experience out of my stupidity. I won't go around telling people 'Hey stay away from Americans at airport because they can mug you' or 'Stay away from Mexicans or they will sell you drugs or make you sell drugs or make you make drugs'

EIT: Maybe some Indian did something really wrong to you like rape you or offende you or something that affected you psychologically. I just pray that you some get your delusions checkd and come back to real world. Or maybe you can become President or Prime Minister or Grand Supreme Commander or whatever you become in your country and ban Indians from your country

Mentioned Bill Nye. Did not forget to include the Science Guy. Well done.
