Here we can discuss on intelligence, intelligence quotient (IQ), IQ tests, IQ societies, etc.

Let me give some reasons for introducing this important topic. Some people think that they are stupid, and they are not. Also, bright person could be interested in how bright he/she is. This can be useful when looking for a job, for instance.

Because I am limited with only one external link, I decided to present World Intelligence Network, a non-profit organization which gather 29 IQ societies.

Is anybody interested in IQ stuff?

I think one IQ test shouldn't be a measurement for intelligence. You can score 120, but at a other IQ test (there are more) you can score just like 70 pts.

If you talk to somebody you get your own point of view of him - if he's intelligent or not.

I'd say being intelligent is knowing a lot of facts and how to apply them in the right situations, while being wise is knowing how, when and where to act in a certain way. Someone can be very intelligent, but not wise. (I know someone like that. He has excellent grades and knows alot of stuff but damn he does some dumb things.) And vice versa.

I partially agree. First, I do not like timed tests. Somebody can't express all his/her abilities in 30-40 minutes. There are high range IQ tests with no time limitation. They were born together with internet, becoming more popular from day to day.

Second, there are various mental abilities: spatial, numerical, verbal, etc. Somebody can be good with spatial items, and less good with verbal ones, or vice versa.

Well, yes. Intelligence is only one parameter of somebody's personality.

Also, I think that it's not important to be very intelligent, more important is to be aware of your abilities, no matter how big/small they are.

Interesting! I found that people who aren't smart get whatever they want, and that intelligent people get to forage for scraps.

I'm also foraging for scraps, but I do not doubt in my intelligence. I would like to find more self-respecting people.

I remember reading somewhere that you are likely your smartest during late adolesence to early twenties. By that I mean your potential is the highest. Obviously you gain more knowledge as you go through life, but in terms of the power of your brain/reasoning, it is highest during that time.

I believe that, but if you are using your mind you can be very clever in the old days too.

With no big difference compared to the youth, in my opinion.

I'm 35. Maybe I can't do things which I could in twenties, but also I now can things which I couldn't then.

The IQ is a measurement of a kind of mentality that benefits the western culture and its derivatives. Scientists like Jared Diamond have said that they consider some people in some hunter-gatherer societies he has spent many time with to be more intelligent than the average western city-dweller even though they would probably score lousy in an IQ test. So I don't think it really measures intelligence but rather how well you are adapted and how productive can you be for a western-style culture and some of the types of thought processes which that task requires.

Spatial and numerical tests are mainly culture-free, good verbal tests could also be pretty culture-free.

Some basic knowledge is indeed needed.

For someone outside civilization, I don't know, but new suitable test could be appropriate.

then how do you explain the disparity between the wealthy people and the non wealthy people? obviously wealthy people have to be intelligent enough to know how to manipulate the rest of the population in order to sustain their wealth. smart people can't be poor.

Simply, average IQ is 100. Maybe the average IQ of wealthy people is 110-120. But there are people with IQ 160-170. And they are not all wealthy.

Simply because they are not manipulators.

well, that assumes you take IQ as the ultimate factor of intelligence, and I do not. Somebody with a proportionally larger IQ is may be more likely to alienate themselves on a social level, so a solid base IQ may in fact be more beneficial to them. Either way, I don't take IQ as the ultimate factor of intelligence, but only a systematic measurement of a specific type of perceptive intelligence involving the recognition of patterns of information. a smart person understands other people and makes appropriate decisions to their circumstances to be successful. I use the term success loosely. Success may be any number of things that allows somebody to lead a fulfilling and satisfying life within their capabilities.

IQ test doesn't do anything other than estimate a persons intellectual potential assuming they use their intellect to it's full potential. In theory they should learn more and learn faster, but it's a loosetheory. The world is full of brilliant but lazy people. These people are full of potential but they don't care. I.Q doesn't determine a person's forte anyway.

I think that IQ tests are a halfway decent way of rating intelligence. My idea of ultimate intelligence is more based around someone's ability to come to the correct conclusion with the fewest facts beforehand. I think that intelligence is deductive capacity more than anything. It shows how your mind puts things together.

We are close to the truth here. IQ should be a good measure, but after careful dealing with other factors such as laziness.

Intelligence is a fairly loose term. IQ is a means to test certain componants of a particular definition of intelligence, altthough even then results are swayed by factors such as sex, race, etc.

That's also common sense which is a.k.a. street smarts as part of it. Most younger people have little of this and gain it as they age, while they can have high intelligence though the entire time.
