I first saw this on the show 20/20 on ABC and apparently they're made a list starting from the happiest country at one onward, using brain scans and years of traveling and studying. Really interesting article. (Denmark came up at number 1, and USA at 23, Canada at 10). Check it out. I googled the subject and this link kind of says about it.

HA! I'm surprised the US made it even in the top 50. People here have serious anger issues.

Well, according to their "happiness map," the U.S. still falls on the happy side of things. Surprisingly enough, considering all of the illegal immigration to the States, so does Mexico...

Actually, that map doesn't seem to match up with the rankings. I don't see 22 other countries that are dark red on there. What gives?

It's because you're close to Ireland than us. The leprechauns exude waves of happiness. Denmarch catches the happiness with all the mountains (or drains it in with all the valleys, whichever one is more relevent, because I'm too tired right now to do any research), so Denmark has big puddles of happiness everywhere.

Well on television they showed there was a set of tests to determine how happy someone was. One of them it showed what from flashing a variety of pictures to the person, with this net-like wired thing on their head measuring brain pulses, and I guess those with a higher rate of activity in the "happiness areas" were shown to be happier.

Oh and regarding Denmark. The show said "9 in 10 citizens are ethnic Danes" and has a "population of 8 million" and said how this combination creates much more of a comeradery effect where everyone has more of a feel of togetherness. Then it went on to saying it's very rare someone would lock a bike, even in an urban environment, and garbagemen are even given stuff like cups of coffee or tea from houses they pass. And 90% (or something like that) or people belong to social groups (forgot what it quite said about that). Seems like a great place.

I'm sure it's poor as hell and possibly war-torn.

Edit: Yup, and they apparently have the lowest GDP per capita in the world at $90. Their average annual wage there is less than what someone makes working a couple of eight hour days at minimum wage in the United States. Now I have to wonder if that is simply because most there don't even have paying jobs or if the wages there are really that utterly useless. Either way, it's pretty bad.

Denmarch catches the happiness with all the mountains (or drains it in with all the valleys, whichever one is more relevent, because I'm too tired right now to do any research), so Denmark has big puddles of happiness everywhere.

Well i did some research: Tallest natural point in denmark is at 170.86metres (560.56ft). The country is flat with little elevation; having an average height above sea level of only 31metres (102ft). Interesting theory though.

Oh and regarding Denmark. The show said "9 in 10 citizens are ethnic Danes" and has a "population of 8 million" and said how this combination creates much more of a comeradery effect where everyone has more of a feel of togetherness. I'm sure that's true in many cases, but people mustn't forget that Denmark isn't like.. a fairy tale. We have murders too man, not a lot, but they're here. Also i've taken a bike once, but it was laying in the middle of the road unlocked. It was pretty wrecked, so i didn't figure anyone would miss it.

Of course Japan is depressed. Imagine working in a bright, crowded city, and then coming home to sleep in a sardine can.

I think the reason Asian countries may not do as well is simply because they have higher standards, but that's just me. The issue is that it's merely subjective. To actually do a study of happiness would require first that we define happiness and then that we have for each person surveyed someone to observe them and talk with them and establish if they are actually happy. Because I know a lot of people who would claim to be happy but are not actually very content or calm.

It's the healthcare SYSTEM that's bad, not the treatment itself. The problem is that it's privately owned, instead of universaly given to all citizens regardless of their income. Why do you think so many foreigners come over for sergeries? Even from Canada. No waiting list so that's a plus.

It's better than Universal Healthcare. So, he had to pay some of his own money for the surgery. Atleast he didnt have to wait in line for 2 years while paying $6000 in taxes. It's funny, people say they hate having to pay to go to the hospital, but what the hell do you think you're doing with universal healthcare? Your taxes ends up getting raised by 50% and you'll end up paying that $6000 anyways, except you'll also end up paying when you DONT need to go to the hospital, and you'll be paying for other people as well. And the more people that go to the hospital, all those poor people and immigrants, and the more hard pressed the government becomes to pay for it all, the higher and higher and higher your taxes gets.

Well they're actually shown the average Canadian pays less for health coverage each year, so don't go ahead of yourself. Even though universal healthcare might work in Canada, that doesn't mean it'll work in America. We have a major problem with poor illegal immigrants from Mexico and an influx of immigrants from other poor countries, so we really can't handle universal health care if you think about it because our taxes would be off the charts. Not to mention most of them don't respect our country culturally and with other things so they don't deserve free health care out of our own pockets...

Yeah I've seen a few these videos already, but I'm sure most of the riots and stuff are just among radical Muslims and poor immigrants from Eastern Europe. That's the case with lots of the riots it seems.

I guess mGard would know more, but as far as I know that wasn't the case here. The Copenhagen municipality reclaimed a building that had become a sort of hippie commune and sold it to a far right, politically active Christian sect, which later demolished the building. So the hippies basically went berzerk.
