I think most people are pissed that they were never told.

The big deal is that when companies do this and we've got legislation such as the Patriot Act that allows government officials to unconstitutionally detain, interrogate, and convict individuals without trial, it's very unsettling. It's things like these that will give absolute control to the powers that be. Companies capitalize on the fact that almost no one reads the user agreements, so if someone finds out what they're doing and tries to oppose it, they can always say "But you agreed to the terms." And then your case is lost immediately. It's control of the ignorant, plain and simple.
