It's in the New York Times as well. How are they suppose to enforce that law when half the country is hammered at all times?Woo, go Ireland!

The article doesn't really say what it encompasses. Its a bunch of 'what if' type of things. I can understand this to an extent as religious remarks in public can start nasty fights, not saying this is right but screaming "God sucks!" in a theatre full of people can be on the level of screaming fire in that same theatre.
I think black metal as a whole just got banned from Ireland...:Pso i guess these guys wont be able to put on a concert in ireland ha?

Maybe it's one of those wacked-out laws nobody cares about anyway. For example, in my state, it's illegal to have oral sex.
The english language is illegal in Illinois :O Don't worry guys, they're just preparing to be Airstrip One. ..I hate the religious right oh so much. And now we see the resurgence of Theocracy in Europe, not seen since the middle of the fifteenth century. Is the Irish government going to create some sort of Christ Czar or something?
Am I the ONLY one that doesn't care? How hard is it to respect a significant religion and not be blasphemous? Sure it violates the freedom of speech but its Ireland not the US.l0veWell I guess you are the only one. Any country that violates the freedom of speech--especially for the sake of religious dogma--should be reprimanded.
Christ on a bicycle that is stupid. :|
Police Man 1: The perp got away!
Police Man 2: God Dammit
Police Man 3: Your under arrest for Blasphemy!
and
.......
Hmm I wonder why no major media outlet has covered this story

I think the New York Times is fairly major, as is the Irish Times in Ireland...

The American culture isn't something that is RIGHT FOR EVERYONE, as some Americans believe. We cannot impose our beliefs on everyone and think that what is right here should be everywhere else.
Wait, it says Jews can be charged for saying Jesus isn't the Messiah....doesn't that mean that ANY Jewish person could be fined with this because the Jewish Religion doesn't believe Jesus is the Messiah? :|

I don't see how freedom of speech is an "American Value" Its kind of a universal right.
Nobody has the right to not be offended in a public sector. Nobody has the right to force the rules of their religion on others.
This is an absolute outrage, I can't believe that in mother****ing 2009 we have a completely assbackward law like this that reeks of 800 years ago. This is really disgusting and as much as I dislike America at times I'm glad I don't live in a country with that idiotic of a gov't.
I can understand if ireland is 95% catholic that they are going to chase the other people away, but another question much more important to me is, is this law really necessary?
The population there must be pretty hostile >.>

Did you not read the many links and information presented in this thread?
Pretty elaborate for an April fools joke. And besides, it's August.
Am starting to believe you guys after the links and how serious you all taking it. Am sort of a bit worrying since am atheist. But i doubt any garda in Ireland would fine me or arrest me for blasphemy. I even had my jack Russel trying to attack a garda once in Ireland when he was checking the car he just found it funny if i remember correctly.
I don't everything is all doom and gloom I think most of it is common sense. Just don't bring up religion in public as it can be a touchy subject to some people but having your door kicked in and raided and your belongings burned on your front lawn? That is ludacris. I think people just need to grow some balls and stand up to the fact that everybody has a right to speak their mind as long as it's in a repectful manner. It's not this generation that's a concern, its the next because teachers won't be able to teach and children won't be able to learn. Everybody will be ignorant and just sweep everything under the rug and that's nieve. Looks like Ireland just shot themselves in the foot. The only thing they are doing is hurting their own country and are going back to the past when really they should be planning for the future.
Honestly, what's the difference between this and the government prohibiting students and teachers praying, bringing the Bible, teachers saying Merry Christmas, or mentioning creation in science classes in schools here in America? Just a thought.ASK_Storythe key word is "in schools". you can do all that stuff in your home and in public parks etc. I don't see why schools need religion to be taught. Creation is not science. if you're the only non-Christian kid in a class and everyone is praying you can bet you're either going to feel like you should join in or get picked on at lunch.
