do you think a thread is successful when you have people arguing in it? without arguments threads will die, but if a thread creates arguments it must be successful right?
This topic is locked from further discussion.
The success of a thread is determined by it achieving your goal. Did you want people arguing in it? If so then it's a success. If you asked for advice and the argument takes it off topic then it's hardly a success as you didn't achieve the result you were after.do you think a thread is successful when you have people arguing in it? without arguments threads will die, but if a thread creates arguments it must be successful right?

The point of a thread, in my opinion, is to have some discussion. The point of a forum, from the roman word actually means "A meeting or medium where ideas and views on a particular issue can be exchanged."
I try to leave some sort of place where people can talk about something in my posts though, this way I don't let the discussion die. :) Threads are best when we have multiple people talking about the same thing. Threads shouldn't be for facebook updates, that's what the WAYLT and Roll Call or Lounge threads are for.
It depends on the thread.
If its in SW, then tat's usually the point. If I'm in PC Hardware asking about good monitors and everyone starts arguing against some AMD fanboys over a GPU choice I should make, then I'd say its the opposite of successful. It doesn't matter if there are 7 pages if I'm not helped at all and the topic derails completely.

Discussing is what people and their buddies do....arguing is what those that disagree with them do."Arguing" or "discussing", what's the difference?

It depends on the thread. Discussing can be just as effective as arguing or debating.
Uh, I mean, no, a thread fails if it has arguing.
I'd like to think so, yes. Plus, it's always a source of entertainment for me when I'm lurking and reading stuff.
It depends on what's being argued about. If it's on-topic, then it's great. I wouldn't call it a successful thread if you made it about war and it turned into an argument about tractors. :P
[QUOTE="Chickan_117"]yes we are No we are notOh, I'm sorry, just one moment... Is this a five page argument or the full "until locked"?[QUOTE="M4Ntan"]
