At the Red Mass in Washinton D.C. Daniel Cardinal DiNardo, Archbishop of Galveston-Houston urged attendees to protect the unborn. Among the Attendees were: 1. Many members of Congress 2. Vice-President Biden (the first Catholic VP in U.S. History) 3. 6 out of 9 Supreme Court Justices (including 5 out of the 6 Catholics on the Supreme Court: Chief Justice John Roberts and Justices Antonin Scalia, Anthony Kennedy, Sonia Sotomayor, Samuel Alito. The Catholic Justice not in attendance was Clarence Thomas. Stephen Breyer, a Jew, also attended. 4. Two Cabinet members;Interior Secretary Ken Salazar and Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood.

Now if all the Catholics listened to His Eminence, then the 6 Catholics (Thomas has a record of voting against abortion) could overturn Roe V. Wade.

The conservatives have spent time loading the court for ages and never gotten that deal done. That isn't going to suddenly change when the political tide turned even further away in that direction. Even folks in South Dakota have repeatedly rejected bans that were just preludes to Supreme Court fights....

you don't need to make abortion illegal to get it to stop.

I don't think abortion is the best option; but it should be a possibility. Especially if stem-cells can help people!

I was going to laugh and dismiss the idea... but then I saw that the Transportation Secretary was there. Perhaps abortion IS in dire peril of being overthrown afterall.

And that's exactly the reason why it's useless to debate over the matter of abortion. While I dislike the idea, and think life begins in the womb, as the years go by, abortion is going to slowly become common place, it's only a matter of time before easily accessible facilities are established in every city and such a service is widespread.

Well, if you go to Amsterdam you'll see that weed is not something that's as hyped as it is now.

And I'm not against abortion 'cause of the notion that it kills babies; I'm against it 'cause it damages women (like with depression, as well as physical problems).

Sure, it's a subtle "market", but it's still there. Once stem cell research advances to a point where major bodily problems can be fixed, there's going to be a demand for stem cells, and unless we can fabricate them, they have to come from somewhere.

Its already illegal to sell embryos.

And are you saying we shouldn't try to help people with stem cells 'cause people might try to exploit their own bodies?

As much as I would love it, I doubt it. Abortion exists due to man's narcissism and love of himself. It won't go away.

Hey, it's a possibility, especially on the black market. Who's to say laws won't change pertaining to embryos in 50 or so years? Sure it's a long way off, but it still is possible to have a market for that in a country with private healthcare, as unorthodox as it sounds.

Ask your doctor if (blank) is right for you.

There's no way I'm going to let the bloody Catholics start making political decisions...

bangell99

Kennedy was a Catholic.

Not all Catholics take orders from the pope.

(Man I hate myself right now for defending Catholics)

Hey, I'm British - we split away from the church, and ...

You might wanna tone that down 'cause you'll get modded.

And, I guess the British should take more offense by Catholic power.

How does aborting a fetus have anything to do with narcissism? Indeed, wouldn't being narcissistic make a person less inclined to abortion?

Ah, that's thoughtful. :P

Don't worry, I'm finished ranting about the Church now. While the mods will take any opportunity to moderate someone, I don't think I've said anything too offensive in this thread.

JoeRatz16

Fortunately, that's not how the justice system works. They have to take in consideration things such as The Constitution, also cases that have been set as precedent are less likely to be overturned.

Hey, I'm British - we split away from the church, and its absurdly stupid papacy long ago.

Keep in mind the only reason you guys split from the church was because a certain someone wanted a divorce.

You're a few years behind. We can even get stem cells from wisdom teeth now.

I think theres a common misconception that overthrowing Roe v Wade will suddenly end abortion. Women who want an abortion will still go and get one, but it will likely be from a "Back Alley Abortionist".

I'm Catholic and I hate abortion. But if I ever got the chance to eliminate it I wouldn't. So don't assume just because they are Catholic they are going to remove abortion.
