Canada has an amazing culture, if you look for it. We're overwhelmed by American culture, which has much better "soundbites". Some parts of Canadian culture that are cool, especially for such a relatively small country: * We invented the UN peacekeepers. * We provide refuge to many people who are persecuted in their native countries. * Our system of law will not allow frivolous litigation culture to develop. * Our health care system is the envy of many countries. Things that are Canadian that are awesome: donairs, Nanaimo bars, Smarties, Keith's, Molson's, Joni Mitchell, Anne Murray, Rush, Sarah McLachlan, Alanis Morrisette, Ryan Reynolds, William Shatner!

I'm proud to be canadian because our electoral system makes sense. Our healthcare is good and accessible, and only those with outrageous standards are opposed to it. Our taxes are high, but manageable. Our military is small but efficient and very well trained. Our air is rather clean, we tend to stick to our morals, and I'm proud of our culture, even if multiculturalism teds to bury it. I'm proud to have the rights I have. I'm proud same-sex marriage has been accepted within Canada, not by popular vote, but through the lawbooks as it should be. I love hockey too. :P Are there things about Canada that I';m not proud of? Sure, but the good outweighs the bad.

The problem with providing refuge to "the persecuted" is that we often get stuck with criminals from other countries. Like here in montreal we have ALOT of gang problems and alot of the members are people from haiti who came to canada. Also, some people who come to Canada get their citizenship and then collect social welfare, but they move back to their own country without telling anyone and keep on collecting the welfare money. I'm not against immigration as long as they are productive members to society and they don't burden the rest of the population.

And Anne Murray....dude cmon....

Yeah, our immigration policies are too lax, they need restructuring desperately.

Tim Hortons put Nicotine in their coffee to get people addicted. It's why my mom struggles with migraines ever since she quit her morning coffee 5 years ago. An evil company, definitely, I would celebrate if they ever went under.

We get ripped off for internet, phone, cable. Poutines are not that great. We got no military. Our accent is the plainest. We don't have a culture. I don't see what there is to be proud of here. Someone want to explain why they're proud to be Canadian?

unholymight

I'm proud to be Canadian because Terry Fox, who runs are held in the memory of all over the world, was Canadian. I'm proud to be Canada because we are a multicultural nation who is far mroe diversified than most any other country you can think of. I'm proud ot be Canadian because Canada stands for peace and equality. I'm proud to be Canadian because we have had prime ministers of every creed and sex around, including native indian (or part). I'm proud ot be Canadian because even though we are the best country in the world we don't push it in people's faces. We don't live in igloos, we don't drive dogsleds, we don't know Fred or Henry or some other random name from Canada. What we do know is that we are the greatest country in the world but we are sensitive to other countries so we aren't that outspoken about it.

I damn proud I'm Canadian. I don't give **** if you think my polite attitude is being a pansy. I open doors and say hello to strangers, if that's whats considered lame then I don't want to be cool.

[QUOTE="Dylan_11"][QUOTE="BaraChat"] Sounds like someone is a closet American. I am NOT so glad that Americans are arguably the most powerful nation on Earth. Don't generalize. I am proud to be Canadian in the way that I couldn't see myself living anywhere else and being as happy as I am.

[QUOTE="BaraChat"]

I'm from Quebec (well actually I'm Lebanese but still)

I'm not extremely proud and I'm not "not proud".

Canada is a great place. People are mostly peaceful even if they whine a lot about everything (especially in Quebec). They usually don't like war and violence. It's a pretty safe place to stay. We're pretty much off-the-radar in international affairs. We don't have much to say.

And, even though many people won't admit it, Canadians are SO glad the Americans are the most powerful country on earth. Canada feels protected by the USA. I'd bet an arm we wouldn't be so "peaceful" if we didn't have the most powerful army/economy in the world a few hours drive away.

We're not that different from the US of A, the music is pretty much the same, people love hockey and Canadian Football (which is not THAT bad, but it's not nearly as great as the NFL, even if it fines every player for every possible reason) instead of baseball and basketball. The American Way of Life has pretty much impregnated Canada as a whole.

And by the way, Poutine is exquisite. And it's from Quebec.

No he's right, majority of Canadians aren't sorry that the US is the most powerful nation. For one, we're on the same side and have pretty much similar cultures, at least in southern Canada (where most of the population is.)
