not to forget that those using Firefox 2.0 have an in-built spell checker:wink:

In any case as long as your message is understandable it's ok.  That is just the thing though; a lot of things people say are incomphrehensible. Being a bit off is nothing to worry about but sometimes you get the impression that not only are some people not bothering with grammar but  they also seem to be going out of their way to make things harder to understand.

Incorrect grammar shows a lack of education and, as such, I consider that in regards to opinions expressed in the post as well.

Not necessarily, I'd imagine in many cases people simply don't catch mistakes the first time around (which is why I have a bad habit of editing). If people simply didn't know then it wouldn't be such a big issue. I think these people know full well which rules they are breaking but they simply don't care.

Mistakes are typos and spelling errors.  I understand those can happen.  But using incorrect grammar is not a mistake.

I'd muuuch prefer people to use grammar.  I'm not like the grammar police or whatever but my god.
It only bugs me when people are lazy enough where it's really hard to understand what they're saying.

But then again, if someone is enough of an idiot to WANT to sound like they dropped out of school in first grade, then fine.
But they better not expect me to not make fun of them and/or ignore them.

It makes me sad when people use really, really bad grammar. For me, good grammar has been drilled into me for as long as I can remember, and it's second nature now, in any situation. It doesn't take any extra effort. I do wonder, when other people have really bad grammar, whether it is a result of sheer laziness or ignorance.

Having said this, I won't completely dismiss a point because of poor grammar, and the vast majority of the time I won't comment on it. It's only really a problem when it does become impossible, or very difficult, to read. Especially when it's a big long wall of text with little/no punctuation of any sort.

Yeah I love that thing :D.

While we're at it, there is a difference between bad grammar and silly typos. I for example, write "oyu" instead of "you" all the time, but people still get what I mean. On the other hand, if I wrote something like "And when guard come i run for life save and death gone" ...or even worse "n whn grd cms i rn fr lyf syv n deth gon"... See my sayin?

But there are excuses of course. If an English boy comes with his messed up grammar.. no, it's pathetic. But a Bulgarian guy? Ukraninan, French.. Russian? They don'y focus much on English, hence they never got to learn it properly. As long as they try, it doesn't matter how bad their grammar is, as long as we understand what they say.

Typos and overall laziness (obviously including horrible spelling and grammar) are two completely different things, in my opinon.

I make plenty of typos, too. xD

Yeah, that's definitely an exception.
For someone who doesn't have English as their first language, I wouldn't even expect them to do it perfectly...

You can't flip a magical switch and become a good writer at a whim. If your writing sucks in forums, it will probably suck when you try to write in 'professional' settings too. Spell check and grammar check don't make you a good writer either. Practice does.

I don't think I agree with that. Most of the people I know don't necessarily speak/write the same way they would in class or for a job that they do with with friends/family and online. I know that I don't speak the same way to professors and employers that I do with my buddies...well unless the employers/professors are really good friends of mine. And I definitely don't write the on college papers the same way I do on aim and such. I don't think it's that hard to be different in different settings...

Agreed. I hate when people jump all over others who are trying. It's not the easiest thing in the world to learn a new language, and English can be pretty damn confusing from an outsider's perspective. If you are trying to form a valid argument on a topic, usually good grammar can get your point across. many a time in an argument, i have seen someone attempt to argue a point, using poor grammar, and get totally torn apart because of their grammar.

but if its just a "hey how's it goin'" kind of thing, then bad grammar is okay.

I am frequently amazed by how well so many foreigners speak English. It makes me ashamed at how other languages are taught in the UK. I wish I was bilingual, or nearly bilingual.

You write well in this setting, which suggests you write well in other settings as well. Short-hand is a PART of your understanding of the language, not your sole understanding. Poor spelling and grammar in forums tend to go hand in hand with limited vocabulary and imagination with respect to sentence structure, neither of which is present in the few posts of yours that I've seen in this forum. You write relatively lengthy, fluent responses. Sure, they may not follow every grammatical rule, but one can tell just from reading your posts that you do understand proper English and can use it without really trying. So I'm not sure why you disagree with my statement. If anything, your writing here supports its validity. You CAN flip a switch and become a bad writer at a whim if you understand how to be a good writer - that's your decision to make (i cun rite liek this yo). But if you're a bad writer, you can't simply become a good writer at a whim.

That site says:

"You have to marvel at the unique lunacy of a language in which your house can burn up as it burns down, in which you fill in a form by filling it out and in which an alarm goes off by going on."

There is nothing unique about it. All languages have these.

An important point to note is that English is the 'main' language. We are for example on Gamespot at the moment, everyone speaks English. Same for most other major internet pages. Not to mention television. There are only a few countries that ..can't find the word, 'translate' into their own language. E.g, Spiderman is speaking French in France :p

With which I am saying, it is much easier to learn English than other languages. I picked up English without any lessons, I just watched TV and played Online games (fan fiction etc is of course a bonus). French on the other hand, well... they gave me lessons but, errr, let's just stick it at: My French is limited.

As I said, it's probably mostly due to our culture, mostly everything is in English. Hence, we pick it up easier.

Your gangsta speak is whack :P

For proteKYFM: It either shows you don't have a vast knowledge of the English language, that you don't care about it, that you prefer to be lax.... Not that you're mentally retarded, have other disorders, not that you're a complete idiot...

I just had a feeling you were comming to that.

Pretentious? Well not only is that out of context but, I'd just like to understand what their saying. Some people can't even type well enough to do that.
