This question was on the Wii's everybody votes channel and the majority of them said cake. I personally believe that cheesecake is nothing more than a name, and its pie-like qualities make it a pie rather than a cake.
a pie has a covering. cheesecake is open. but it's not really a cake either...my_name_is_ron
what about pumpkin pie?
By definition it's a pie.
But if someone asks if I like cake or pie better, I'll say cake because of cheesecake. I dunno why.

wewt. i win!
It is a pie because it consist of a crust filled with something.
A cake consist of a batter-type product baked and then layed with stuff and/or spread with frosting.
I'd say pie. Cheesepie doesn't have the same ring to it, though, so the name is acceptable.bluezy
Agreed :)

Not necessarily. Many pies, such as pumpkin, do not have coverings. A cheesecake is a pie, and there really shouldn't be any debating regarding this manner. For one, there is a crust, and for two, it is much denser than cake, having a pie-like texture. It's a pie, and having "cake" in its name is simply irrelevant.

Pecan Pie doesn't. Neither does Banana Cream Pie.

Nor Pumpkin, or [usually] any of the custard pies! (which, again, is what "cheesecake" is)So by going with everyone's logic...what would happen if I put a cake in crust? Would it still be a cake, or would it become pie?Evz0rzI think that'll just tear the very fabric of space and bring about the end of our universe.

perhaps for you americans. but here in the logical uk an open dessert like a pumpkin or pecan pie would be referred to as a tart. all things enclosed in pastry are pies and all things with a pastry base are tarts (or sometimes flans). cheesecake is neither.
Its a cake, lots of cakes have crust bases.lucas_kelly
cakes don';t have bases. they're a solid lump or the same stuff all the way through. with maybe a layer of someting

Cheese cake doesn't have a pastry base. Apple pies, pumpkin pies, meat pies, all have pastry bases, not bread crumb or biscuit bases like cheese cake.

which is exactly why cheesecake is neither a pie or a cake
