It's a cake, pies have savoury pastry that encloses the whole pie, tarts are pies that are open and lots of cakes have bases made out of crumbed biscuits.

Proof that OT in fact DOESN'T read posts. I posted a link right before these answers.

How does it look like a cake? It looks like a pie and if you read the link...you'd see it's a pie.

Yes, I know it's been proven that it's a pie but where I live, it looks more like a cake than a pie. What can I do about that?

Yes, but the term pie is misleading as it implies that cheesecake is a baked and completely covered savoury food when it clearly is not... And I can't believe I'm debating the finer points of cheesecake classification... I propose a new category for cakes with a crumbed bottom, suggestions?

Cheesecake isn't cake at all; it's pie. Cakes don't have a crust and they have a fair amount of flour in them. Cheesecakes have a crust but no flour. Cakes also tend to rise a fair amount when cooked and have a lot of air in them at the end; cheesecakes don't.

Cheesecakes bear the most resemblance to a cream pie. Cream pies are basically just pudding or custard in a pie shell. Cheesecake filling is custard with cream cheese providing the dairy, instead of milk. That makes the result firmer, but it's the same idea.

It's not a crust! Just because you put crushed up cookies in the bottom of the tin doesn't make it a pie. It's more like a layer than a pie crust.

Furthermore, cheeseCAKE :|

Yea you have two types of cheesecake, the nobaked like you get out of the jello boxes at walmart LINK

Then you have the Baked cheesecakes like at the cheesecake factory that look something like this

I personally like the no baked but the baked ones from the cheesecake factory down here in Houston Texas are pretty good, the only difference to me are that the baked ones are a firmer and not as jello like as the no baked ones.

Tomatoes are fruits. Fruits and vegetables are determined by what part of the plant it comes from. Since tomatoes are basically the plant's ovaries, it's considered a fruit...

Doesn't matter. You don't get to arbitrarily decide against facts.

Pie = An article of food consisting of paste baked with something in it or under it; as, chicken pie; venison pie; mince pie; apple pie; pumpkin pie.

Last time I had cheesecake it most definately wasn't baked.

Then you had a no baked cheese cake, real new york ****cheese cake is baked.

Woah, you guys bake your cheescakes? weird :?

Yeah, americans bake their cheesecakes, but british cheesecakes are unbaked, and since cheesecake is a broad term refering to either (and more variations), a cheesecake isn't a pie. An american baked cheesecake is, but the term cheesecake refers to a much broader range of foods, so the term cheesecake does not mean a pie.
