Do you think there will ever be a point when CDs won't be sold in a store anymore?

Tea. Earl Grey. Hot.
Yes, its already happening now. The music industry took a big turn and is suffering, now everything got faster and digital distrubution is the only way. The days of Cd's are almost done.

I think eventually this might be the case but not necessarily soon. Many people still enjoy physical copies, or want to rip their CDs in lossless formats or higher bit rates.
Digital distribution in general I think still has a long way to go considering all of the problems with DRM and device compatibility.
That would be a tragedy if digital distribution is the way people want to buy music. But there is still a market for CD's currently.....here's hoping.
If they perfect it, I can see it happening. But by studying how things are now I do not believe it will be the only thing.
I like it for pc games but when it comes to movies, cd's, and console games I prefer the actual thing.
I don't think so. I'd much rather have a disc and a case. This way I know I'll always have it. It gives me a sense of security. I'm sure others feel the same way.
I admit I love streaming a netflix movie and wish I could stream new releases. Also, I LOVE downloading xbox live games, like the GTA IV addons, instead of having to go out and buy them. Digital distribution rocks.
I can't deny, however, that there is a lack of control by not having a physical copy. Sometimes I never quite feel like I actually own something. And it also stinks because my game collection on the shelf doesn't grow as much because I downloaded something instead.
So I'm pretty split on what I prefer.
Digital Distribution sucks. If I can't have a physical copy(and I don't mean having to burn it to some flimsy blank CD with a 3 year shelf life), I'm not buying it. PDF artwork does not equal album artwork.Yes, its already happening now. The music industry took a big turn and is suffering, now everything got faster and digital distrubution is the only way. Mmhmm. It would indeed be tragic, as a shift to digital distribution has already shown it would be a death-knell to the album concept. I support albums, so I support physical media. That would be a tragedy if digital distribution is the way people want to buy music. But there is still a market for CD's currently.....here's hoping.

PDF artwork does not equal album artwork. Yes tell me about it. I personally hate downloading and I can't think of a single time where I have done it. Not only is it not supporting an artist that I am a fan of but the quality is poor, and I don't even own the darn thing. But most importantly, their is no C.d or album that I can hear in completion.Yes, its already happening now. Albums are so extremely important, this generation has by far underestimated them and now its getting to the point where making an album is just pointless. Its a double edged sword as their are positive sides to it as well but I really hate how the music industry is going. And the ironic part is, it isn't their fault.:?
I can see it becoming very popular, possibly overtaking hard copies of stuff. aaronmullanWhy? It's not as good quality and you don't own the music. And back up copies don't last.....computers can crash. And you have nothing.:(
I sure hope not. :(
Not only does owning a physical copy beat the **** out of pda artwork, but if 128 kbps mp3 becomes the standard I might stop buying music altogether...
I like digital distribuiton, actually I have some keys of games via steam, I also downloaded some softwares and even Windows 7 professional throught MSDNAA (academic alliance), it's about 1 years that I didn't useCD or DVD...
I installed win7 with an hd usb bootable, and the iso's from software and games are saved inexternal HDD..
Actually with ours ADSL we can download a full release of everything in few hours, so W Digital Distribuition... less problem for users ;)

The things you buy are tied to your account, so you can just download the things onto a different computer.

Yeah I'm with the guys looking for hard copies. Like I said previously, it's nice to have that sense of security. It's a pain to have to look up all the stuff and download it again if you lose it. I can see how things like Steam are great for PC's but, when it comes down to my consoles, give me a hard copy over downloadable content anyday.

And back up copies don't last.....computers can crash. And you have nothing.:( Well, you can burn it to a cd or several cds yourself and have just as many back up copies as if you had bought the cd, and they could easily include the album art too, though the book would be a problem. The quality to price ratio is what confuses me. You can rent a movie from the Playstation store for like $4 dollars, and it's cheaper for them to get it to you, has less business overhead, and is a lower quality than if you went to a movie rental store and rented a dvd there(and you can almost always get it from the brick and mortar stores cheaper.) It seems the only thing driving digital distribution right now is people's laziness. When it becomes more about offering more features to the customer and less about trying to get a nice, big slice of that fat lazy-person money cake, then I can see it being more beneficial to everyone.
I keep all of my CDs in lossless formats. That way, I can convert to another format in the future without worrying about substantial quality loss.
How do I store my files? Partitioned drives, external drives, and data DVDs so I'm not worried about losing the digital or hard copy.
