Is facebook just a popularity contest?

Seriously, I see people with 500-1000+ friends on their list, does someone seriously have that many friends? Plus, I've seen many people who just add people without even knowing people just to seem more "Cool"...

I just started my facebook and noticed...so what do you think?

For stupid kids maybe. I only have like 35 friends in mine. I only add people that I actually know well. A lot of people just add everyone they have ever heard of.

No some people use it as a form of communication and event organising. It's like a network which you can keep track of happenings and invite people.

I thought it was more of a myspace thing to have people with huge lists? Some kids on that have thousands of friends. I use my facebook only for school friends really, so my friends count hovers around 100.

The only people I am friends with are people I have personally met/know. Like I have said before, it is a very useful tool and I don't get why everyone likes to rag on it. Without facebook I would forget birthdays, miss important events, not recieve school information or party invites.

i quit facebook not long ago because people i really didnt like from school were finding me through that people you many know feature. and i got sick of people uploading about 600 photos of themselves. wtf is the point ?

I just got one a few weeks ago and no its not just a popularity contest I use it to keep up with friends

If you are high school im sure it can be seen that way. Im in college, its a great way to keep in touch with lots of different people.

i believe it is a popularity contest on there that is why i honestly dont go on it much anymore. it is also now just people posting what they are doing every 5 minutes which makes me mad

One of the main reason's i usually dont go on there is what you post, also as well the status gets hella annoying :lol:

I don't go overboard with the # of friends I have at all and if any of them start bombarding my news feed thing with status updates or notes or whatnot, I tell it to stop showing 'stories' about them. The things people are willing to do and share on there to get attention is disturbing. My friend and I started a group about it because we were tired of complaining to each other. I guess I just don't want all of someone's business shoved in my face.

I know some people who do that and I think it's ridiculous.

my old PE teacher (who is awesome) has 1100 friends plus. Thats quite funny

I have about 350, but I'm in high school. I usually go through my list every now and then removing people I don't know/like

I have a little over 100 people. They're all people I know, but only like a few I really talk to. Facebook is pretty useless to me, since I never talk to anybody on it.
