Hey,

Just a question for the Americans. In all the TV shows about high school, football is always seen as the biggest thing in school and if you are the quarterback you're like the star. Is this real in most USA high schools? Is being in the football club a thing that everyone wants to be in?

Football is a religion in this country and it's no different in high school. For a lot of schools, football keeps the schools funded and funded well.

Football is a way of life for some schools. You know this must be true when a High School team is building a $60 million dollar stadium.

You'd actually be surprised at the level it's at. My high school football team was an absolute joke, and one season we went 0-8 or something and the next year we did no better only winning like 2 games the entire year. Yet every pep rally the football players get to sit in chairs in front of everyone and get big introductions while our national champion track team got a little 1 minute intro and the undefeated CIF winning wrestling team gets the same treatment.

Football is absolutely huge here, but as far as high school goes I think it's only huge in the South/Southeast. I live in Kansas, and everyone went to the football games, sure, but it wasn't the focal point of our school culture. College football is absolutely massive, the NFL is as well. Sports are huge in the US. Here's a vid of my school, K-State, beating our in-state rival KU at home in basketball (starting at about 2:10 in the video I couldn't hear anymore, at 7:10 the festivities begin!). Football is king at my school, but to this day I've never been anywhere so loud. KU didn't even consider us a rival (in basketball, at least) at that point in our histories, seeing as how they had beaten us at our place for over two decades straight. You can clearly see that the passion is still there however. It constantly amazes me how huge sports are in the US. There are so many amazing events, games, etc. all the time!

EDIT: Sort of a rant, but basically I was trying to say that it amazes me how huge sports are in the US. Yes, football is the biggest.

Loudest stadium in the country (maybe the world) is Penn State during a white out

Loudest B-Ball stadium is probably Illini's assembly hall, but I live in Illinois so I'm a big biased :)

Hahaha everyone will have their biases! I've been to all kinds of sporting events, even games in Allen Fieldhouse (KU), but games at Bramlage Colliseum, our arena, are so loud they hurt your eardrums. I'm no expert, but the stadium was built with enough funds that weren't directly alumni related that we have one of the largest student sections (that cannot be shrunk) relative to the number of seats in the arena. It's not one of the biggest arenas, but the way it's built and the amount of students in there makes it so your ears are ringing the next day after a big game. College Gameday said Bramlage was the loudest basketball arena they were at last year!

Those Big Ten football games are nuts though, and Nebraska joining it should make it even more so!

It depends on the school.

Where I went the school was mad about sports. However, it wasn't the whole 'footballers are better than everyone else' attitude, as there were so many sports our school was good at. Our cricket, basketball, league, union, and socer teams were some of the best in the state. However, our school also had great debating, public speaking, etc. The funny thing is, half of the footballers were also in the choir, got top ranks in their grades, and did community service. Also, some of the most popular people in the school were not in fact sportsmen, but the highly intelligent group ...

Yea, in the states Football is pretty much MOST high schools largest sport.

The exception is the rare school with a very strong baseball/basketball team.

But pro football is huge. Not soccer in other countries huge, but pretty popular none the less.

Baseball is pretty close too. But with baseball you have like 162 games. Regular season football is 16 games (I actually think its 17 now, but I dont remember), so each football game is really that important in the standings and media coverage.

But in the US we cannot forget NASCAR. Even though alot of people consider it a joke. If you ever give it a chance, it can be very exciting, believe me, I used to dismiss it as a bunch of hicks driving in circles for 4 hours. But these guys really are athletes. The stress and concentration they have to deal with is phenominal. Plus they have to endure intense heat all while driving 200+mph at times. Most fans have 1 or 2 drivers that they follow which is where the feeling of competition comes in.

Also, NASCAR is the largest spectator sport in the US and is the largest source of commercial sponsorship.

Haha did I not mention that in my very post?? Who the hell wouldn't rush a court after ending an incredible streak like that? Didn't take anything away from KU anywhere in that post, was simply noting the passion in US sports. We care about all of our sports in Manhattan, including that football team (the terrible one, might I add) that marched in to Lawrence and took it over this year. Can't wait to go to the game in Lawrence again this year! Haha :D (my little brother studies journalism at KU, so it's not like I hate them).

Football is huge at my high school. We've gone undefeated the past two years i think and are ranked 3rd in new jersey. Were also big on basketball when our team is good. We have a few really good years then we suck for a few years but i football team is always good.

Yeah, basketball is a religion at KU. As for football, well, we did win the Orange Bowl in 08! And I will add that the overall KU vs K-state football record is heavilly in KU's favor; it's just been rough recently.

I know all the history, believe me. K-State's football team was like a high school team before Snyder. Terrible. Hopefully we start to turn a corner since he's been back for a few years. Here's hoping Frank Martin can keep things up as well. I have nothing but love for Bill Self. The man is a ****act and is brilliant.

I went to the Atlanta Motor Speedway last year, supposedly one of the best NASCAR events to go to. I almost dozed off multiple times despite all the noise...maybe it just isnt for me, but watching a nascar event live is easily the most boring sporting event i've ever been to. Just cars going in a circle...forever...can barely tell which car is which in the stands, and even when you do it's hard to tell who's in first or not...oh and let's not forget the rednecks.

[QUOTE="JasonDarksavior"]Man, wish I lived in USA. In Australia, sports is hardly taken seriously in school.. :(JasonDarksavior

Private school? Sounds like "The Kings School"

Oh please, they had to pay for all their best players :P

It was a Marist Brothers school in South-West Sydney. So it wasn't a public school, and it wasn't the Kings ...

It is, but in high school it depends on where you go. My school, the team is a joke and only serves as really the laughingstock of the division. No one goes to the game for the actual game; they go for their friends.

Yeah, it is. I remember people wanted intermediate school and high school to have a wrestling team. A petition was signed and it did nothing their excuse was it would affect basketball and football.

Football is a religion in this country and it's no different in high school. For a lot of schools, football keeps the schools funded and funded well.

Pirate700
Agreed. Americans take their football very seriously, from high school to the NCAA, and the NFL.

Half of the rugby teamis also in the choir, sounds like the islanders in our school, but they are dumbasses, bludgers, and never stop eating.

I'm guessing you go to a school in the city, if you go to the countryside, its alot different.

Yep, right in Sydney. We hardly treat sports seriously.

They shouldn't. Any money spent by schools on sports when it could be spent on education is a waste.

Yeah, screw exercise, all of the social skills, as well as team-building skills that a young person can learn through sports.

Just a question for the Americans. In all the TV shows about high school, football is always seen as the biggest thing in school and if you are the quarterback you're like the star. Is this real in most USA high schools? Is being in the football club a thing that everyone wants to be in?

JasonDarksavior

Yes. Everyone else is either a nerd, or a basketball/baseball/soccer-playing nancyboy.

If you're a town that's hundreds of miles away from city with a pro sports franchise to 'call your own', high school sports fills in that gap. A successful handsome QB will 'rule the school' at any high school, but he won't be mythologized by the whole town in a big city as he would be in a tiny town in the middle of nowhere.

Depends on what part of the country you are from. There are certain states where football is very popular.

Not so isane about it here in Canada. Though it is taken seriously. I was quarterback of my HS football team, and it got invited to a lot of parties and, well, let's just say cheerleaders.

As someone that grew up in Indiana (about 30 minutes from Notre Dame, to be exact), I can tell you that not a soul in Indiana cares about the IU football team. So I don't think anyone will care. Just like no one will care that Northwestern calls themselves NU like us.
