I've never been to the US, and I've always wondered whether high school is actually like it is shown in all the films, with jocks and AV clubs and nerds getting beat up in the corridors. Just interested to know...

Mine kicks out anyone who gets into a fight on or around school property. No acceptions, so in my school, there aren't fights and crap like that. Nerds are actually generally accepted anywhere as long as they aren't annoying, same with just about any group. Only a couple of people I know stay true to the stereotypes, like this kid who we all assume is crazy from the way he talks and this jock who is generally just annoying and has probably slept with half of all the cheerleaders.

Give a specific movie, and we might be able to tell more. There are too many movies depicting high school in different manners to be able to answer the question accurately.

I would say most movies portray high school quite similarly. I suppose I mean the whole teen comedy kind of genre, like American Pie, not like Donnie Darko or anything like that.

That's the first time I ever heard the words documentary and musical in the same sentence...

But, I don't know. HSM is not exactly a movie I would choose to watch. I was thinking of something a little better (?).

Like "The New Guy." My high school was nothing like the high schools in that movie.

Movies, esspesially comdeys, are a big strech of the truth. You will not just find people getting into fights because they're labeled as part of this group, and often people part of a group don't even look like they would be or act that much like it. They also push out old stereotypes, like nerds getting beaten up over knowing a computer. Most people know a computer in this day and age, and nerds are handy to the others around here to help out with computers.

Not at all. We have about 2 dances all year (which is good), 70% of the kids are on some kind of drug/drink a lot, teachers are more down-to-earth, and most people don't get along very well. There's also a decent amount of racial tension (people don't like white boys, I am white).

I will say TV and Movies about highschool and college is just an exaggerated version of real life.

They dont just make that stuff up - they are all based on collaborated experiences of writers and producers and exaggerated to get us to watch it.

Depends really. My high school had huge fights (one particular "race war" with Mexicans vs. blacks), nerds that got picked on a lot, typical jocks, the hotties, the uglies, and so on. Plenty of good moments in high school; the embarassing (farted once during stretches in weight lifting, was trying so hard to hold it in lol), the awkward (teacher having a nervous breakdown because no one really cared about the class), the funny (messing with the spanish teacher), and what not. Of course, there's always the bad with the good, but overall I'd say high school was fun. So far, I'm not liking college as much as I did high school.

my high school sure isn't and I don't expect very many other high schools to be too. upperclassmen dont really care and everyone in your grade should be people you've at least grown up with or know over time. unless you did something to piss off a group of people, it's all good

I have to say i was a little scared when I first walked into high school because i had no clue what it would be like, and i had gotten a bad impression from videos like that. I am a little bit of a nerd, and then again im decently strong (winner of the arm wrestle championship in my previous school :D) . But when I approached my first day, everything was fine. I made many friends, including a girlfriend, and im in a band. Its fun, Comedy Central really exaggerates it.

Yeah, it depends on the school you go to. I go to an average-sized school (1,300 students or so) in Fargo, North Dakota. People are pretty civil here. Of course there are cliques and fights and disputes, but you don't see people being singled out and tortured by bullies every single day like you see in the movies...at least not here in Fargo.

I'd always wondered this myself...

It seemed like some sureal happy fantasy land compared to my high school experience, because spending 5 years with 3000 other males in which the game of choice was throwing hard objects at each other was totally FUN.

And OMG FEMALES IN SCHOOL, OMGWTFBBQLEMMEINNAOOO!!!! I kid. But single sex education is a pile of negative fun. Be thankful, those of you who escaped such hell. You know how teenage males act when there are no females around to 'impress'? Like stupid jackasses? Yeah well it was like that the ENTIRE time.

Nope.

I mean, we do have our social groups but theyre not all-exclusive like movies and show make them out to be.

I had fun in high school; I was like a diplomat. I was cool with everyone. I played football and got along with the jocks. I was in the band so I got along with the artsy fartsy kids and the band ners (I was one of em lol I love those peeps). I grew up with a few of the goth kids so I got along with them. And I really liked science at the time so I got along with your more traditional nerds.

The only group I didnt like was the water polo players because for some reason they hated the football players. They wanted more publicity and respect in the school and I was like "Dudes, when thousands of people come to your games and give the school tens of thousands of dollars each weel, then you can talk crap...otherwise, just play your sport, I will play mine, and lets have fun.

Nope.

If you have watched the Lifetime movie, She's Too Young, you will see that the whole school got syphilis. That would mean that every single student had sex with each other.

If you have seen High School Musical, that movie gives off a happy-let's-go-dancing vibe.
