[QUOTE="wemhim"][QUOTE="Roland1987"][QUOTE="Jemdude"]

[QUOTE="ArmoredAshes"]honey is an animal product...and vegans arent supposed to eat anything from animals...you could go vegetarian if you are concerned about not being able to eat honey hahahaRoland1987

I would prefer to call myself vegan than vegetarian because people might confuse me with a lacto-ovo vegetarian (a vegetarian that also allows for dairy and eggs).

I'm going vegan primarily for health reasons and honey doesn't have the health concerns that meat, dairy and eggs have. In fact, it has properties that kills bacteria. I suppose if a person were very concerned with animal welfare, they might abstain from honey. It looks like there are different degrees of veganism in actual practice; even if it differs from the original definition.

If you were solely in in for the health benefits you wouldn't be concenered with the label peopel will give you...you would rather be called vegan? Why? Ego points for the title, or what? If your choice to go vegan was health based you wouldn't feel the need to announce it or find out certain rules to make sure you don't lose your title...

Yeah, it should only matter if you're okay with it, not if it has some cool name.

Exactly...Eat what you want.Live the way you want, don't follow arbitrary rules just to gain a title...

I suppose you may have a point there.

In either case you cant be sure, but I know one thing for a fact. Calling yourself a vegan and claiming to take sustenance purely off plants completely ignores the role of decomposition of not only plants, but animals into creating the so-called vegan diet. Nothing but a facade I tell you. Remember the cow manure they use the next time your munching on your cabbage or whatever it is that is munchable in a vegan diet.

true vegans wouldn't do or use many things that depend on animal byproducts...

do what you'd like if it's just for health reasons, don't even worry what people say here.

That didn't show that honey is vegan, it showed that the entire concept of veganism is completely ridiculous.

I wouldn't see why not. YOu don't slaughter the bees to eat it. They make it and put it in combs. The only thing they do is put some bee puke in honeycomb and seal it up.

Vegans don't eat milk or cheese either, which do not require that you slaugher a cow.

I have to agree. Eating healthy and becoming vegan are only loosely related, unless the reason for doing so is more of a forced change away from fast food or something. But titling it seems odd if it's only a matter of personal change.

Becoming vegetarian/vegan for health reasons is probably the justification I have most issue with, since it defies logic. All the vegans I know are vegan for religious or ethical reasons, and those that claim health will usually fall back on ethics if pressed.

I'd equate honey with milk in terms of being invasive to the animal in question - it just comes down to howyou feel about cows versus bees.

Someone else mentioned earlier on that they don't eat cheese because the same people who eat cheese also eat beef (and, I suppose, support the beef industry). That shouldn't matter much - most dairy farms are separate from beef farms due to the massive capital investment required. The only meat that comes out of a dairy farm is veal (which is almost always young bulls, since males are of little use when it comes to producing milk), and veal is easily avoided. Processed meats may also include elderly female dairy cows that fell off the end of the milk production train, but it's not as if by purchasing cheese you're contributing to that cow's death. Health reasons I can see, since cheese isn't exactly good for you, especially in large quantities. It just tastes awesome.
