Im not a big person that follows the stock market but recently my father has had it on the tx. i made a acount on E-trade like 2 months ago before all of this thiking i was going to try and get into it. Now that all the markets are like negitive would it be a good idea to buy and then sell when they Hopefully increase in a while?

Could be, but I wouldn't say it's any more of a sure thing than normal. They could continue falling, and some companies might go under, which not only leaves you sans dividends but also without shares of any kind.

I still think that index funds are a better bet than juggling stocks yourself (plus, it's way easier) but I would be surprised if the markets are done faceplanting just yet.

While things are down it's good to buy simply because it's cheap. However there is no guaruntee you are going to get a good return from what you buy right now. If you're first time you should probably invest in local companies and utilities, things that people depend on everyday to live.

I say It's a good time. If the company recovers, than you could make alot of money. Unless the company gets destroyed, than you will loose money.

Nobody knows. That's the thing with the market.

IMO your best is to do some research on investing first.

For me, I'm sinking about $1500 into some historically high-performing stocks, looking at how they've done over the last 5 years vs. the last 6 months. Stuff like IBM that has fallen 15-20 points in the last few months seems very likely to rebound to where it was, as long as I take a long view on the investment.

Probably better to go into Mutual Funds if you're a beginner. Investing in stocks now would be good to buy now because they are cheap, but you have to know what the hell you're doing. The stock market can't be treated like a Casino

Well, the time to buy soocks is whenever you need them. See, socks aren't that affected by the economy. They are socks. If you get holes in them, get new ones.

Well the prices are dropping quickly.so I'd hold out a little longer, then swoop in and buy up a lot of stuff and wait till the prices rise again. (And they will)

Who knows where the bottom of the market is; if no one is buying to be sure, the market can fall almost arbitrarily far

IMO there are some good deals out there. You can wait for the bottom but predicting the bottom of a market is way hard to do. If you're willing to put some time in you don't have to wait for the bottom.

That's why I prefer to stick with historic performers and to take a long view; companies with a long track record and low exposure to the current subprime mess (meaning avoiding financial stocks). I'm sure a few more old titans will fall before we're out of this mess, but again, taking the long view, companies like IBM and MS are going to make up their lost ground and more, whether it takes 6 months or 5 years

you're never going to be able to guess the bottom. don't try to. look for stocks of companies that are good companies, profitable, good management, etc.. that will likely go up in the long term.

Recession/depression isn't really good for anyone in this globalized world. At least, not from any angle I can see.

Bit of a gamble. If you buy them now, you need to hope that the company doesn't go under.

Buying stocks right now = taking over someone else's mess.

Dont buy anything except an extra large mattress.

Don't listen to these Wall Street "insiders" either - all they do is toss around false hope to get people to invest in their OWN portfolios.

They are all LIARS!

They didn't have microwaves in 1929.

Look, we'll make it on Poptarts AND Soup.

Instant-Ramen too. Just add water!

Also - we can polyurathane our carboard box houses so they don't degrade as fast as they did in the 30's.

Florida is bad as it is with the Hurricanes.

I would move to Arizona - less humidity - I mean, it's a DRY heat!
