I filled up my car a few weeks ago, and, as always, set my gas cap on the bumper. But wouldn't you know it, I drove off without putting the cap back on. Is there a disadvantage to driving like this?

Your gas cap keeps in a power that opens the gate to Hell.

I'd just go to AutoZone and buy another one. They're fairly cheap

Don't mention Hell on these boards. We've seen far too many Theist vs. Nontheist debates recently.

That happned to me some time ago. But some jerks down my street filled my tank with sand to ruin my engine, so i had to pay quite a lot of money to fix it.

If you don't put another one back on you can get a "Check Engine" light to come on. It just matters what type of model/year of car you have. Otherwise the cap prevents water and other debri from getting into your gas tank.

It won't hurt your car at all. Some people actually drive around with a rag instead of a gas cap.

Some of the newer models require it. My engine light came on, and it was due to the emissions control which can go off if the gas cap isn't on properly. I just got my truck a month ago, so I don't know all the details.

It happened to my moms car a few weeks ago and she hasn't had many problems with it so you should be fine but you should still probably get it fixed.

"A gas cap with a faulty seal could cost drivers more than $61 worth of gasoline a year due to evaporation." So yeah its good to drive with it on. And thats $61 if it has a faulty seal. With none would cost you I'm guessing over $100 of gas a year maybe

I'm pretty sure that the gas can evaporate without the gas cap on.

I believe that the gas would evaporate out of the tank more rapidly but then again I'm just assuming.

The cap keeps water and pollutants out and your gas in. It's pretty major.

And I do have experience with this because I lost my cap for my Honda and I was driving in a town about an hour away from home when it started raining heavily. The rain got in my gas and caused my car to die on the highway. I had to wait for it to quit raining before I could drive again. It wasn't a pleasant day.

gas evaporates fairly quickly, but besides that I dont think that it would hurt anything. Unless of course you were in a bad wreck and gass went everywhere.

 that reminds me of the time my buddy dropped my bike in my backyard, the gas cap was loose and he got gas all over him. So I started shooting bottle rockets at him. (had a fire extinguisher next to the grill)

Yea its bad, gettin water and other random stuff from the air is not good for your gas.

Hopefully your car starts tommorow!
