Hmm... certainly not an ideal situation to be in (paycheque to paycheque), but you've got many years ahead of you. It may be good to evaluate all of your expenses and figure out if you really need to be spending as much as you do. A big part of the reason I could be considered financially successful with a rather limited salary is the care I take to save and avoid debt.

pianist
I spend $60 a month on smokes and about $100 on beer. Other than that I don't really spend alot. I'm trying to upgrade employment currently, since moving back to PA/NY area from Iowa I have yet to find the kind of work that I can settle into yet. I have no debt, but only because I haven't found a job that is good enough for me to work and go through school yet, or if I don't go to college found a job good enough to where I can budget in a loan payment for a car. I'll make it, just have to keep trying until I can get into the right place where I can work my way into a salary I can manage something with. I'm not afraid to work hard and have some intelligence (although some may severely contradict that  ) so I'm not too worried.

Societal values are backwards...

Well, it's perfectly fair - they're being paid what they are 'worth' to society, because society is obviously paying enough to allow for their fat salaries. The real question here is "should society place so much worth on athletic entertainment?"pianist
Correcto !! Yes it is society that manages because it depends on how interested we are. It goes back to the Roman days. If no one wanted to watch a man get eaten by a tiger then it would not be popular but since everyone goes crazy to see a man fight a tiger then it became a sport. Society demands sports so they pay and athletes get paid by sponsors and such.

I'm pretty certain that I DO pay for education and police services, etc.

I'm pretty sure that we DO value education, infrastructure, and national security more than sports or books, given that we HAVE to pay for them. Do you know ANYONE who would be in favour of raising taxes in order to pay our athletes with tax dollars?

MrGeezer

Do you know of ANYONE who is more willing to pay the taxes which fund the essential services in society than buy a new flat panel TV or other entertainment-related item? Given the choice, would people pay MORE taxes towards funding these services to ensure that the people who keep society functioning are paid an amount which suggests what they do is more important than entertainment? :|

People go to great lengths to minimize the amount they pay in tax. And some avoid paying it altogether, risking jail. Yeah... I'm sure they really value the essential services that taxes fund. The GOVERNMENT recognizes these services are essential and, by necessity, has to FORCE people to turn over some money to pay for things they need to have. Don't confuse that which is rightly valued by society with that which is valued by the individual, because if it were up to the individual, most would take everything they could without contributing anything in return.

I dont think its fair to see people hit a ball or dunk it and get paid 11 million just for that while many people work hard all their lives that they might not even reach the 1 million mark. To see players that havent even went to HS and College and get paid a ton, i find something really wrong with that. Tjeremiah1988

Many people never make a million in their life? Are you serious? It's not that hard to make a million dollars in your entire life, especially in our time..

In a word yes.

Reasoning, athletes in general give positive role models, they work harder for far less money than any actor ever has, what they do is not self serving at all but rather a service to the community as a whole, when a team has a great season the entire region has a common experience that tends to bring people together, professional sports are also a huge part of our nation's economy, and people in general love and respect competition.

Second_Rook

how is it not self serviing when they're paid to perform??? Also, it takes a lot of talent to be a good actor, not like you can just pull it out of your ass. have you seen the movies (if you'd even call them that) with people like 50 cent??? I suggest you never do.Also, you seem to forget the fact that it takes YEARS and a **** of money to make a movie. How often to athletes need to memorize pages and pages of script, movments for certain scenes and emotion. You do realize they get up VERY early in the morning and don't have it nearly as easy as you make it to be.

Your complete ignorance of professional sports could not be more obvious. It takes years for a franchise to build a championship team and a sh!t load of money as well more than any movie I would venture. When a team wins a championship it is like a gift to the entire city or state that they represent.

Athletes memorize pages and pages of script, it's called a play book, and every time they improvise they are at significant risk of injury. They also get up very early in the morning and often times live apart from their families for the majority of the season. What do you think they come to the games and that's their entire job?

As for pulling it out of your ass, are you suggesting that's what a great quarterback, pitcher, or point gaurddoes? This is absurd.

It's clear that you put yourself and your preffered entertainments on a pedestal. Unfortunately you don't know what you are talking about.

Finally, most people get up very early in the morning for work, you make that sound like an accomplishment.

you seem to forgbet that I never said I have extensive knowledge of sports, nor did I say it doesn't take talent to compete in pro sports teams. Maybe if you would of stopped to think, in stead of jumping my **** you would have realized I was merely saying being an pro athlete and actor arent exactly that different. thanks for being so presumptious though........Yes I know perople get up eary in the morning to work, but I'm not even going to get into that one with you, thanks. :)

Yes I think the amount for most sports is fair. The only sport which pays rediculous amounts of money is soccer. I think Sports like cricket in rugby the pay is fair.

Sports isn't easy. You can't just be talented and get into the American basketball team or australian cricket team. You have to work very, very hard. I don't play basketball but I know there is a lot more to it than just dunking a ball. for cricket for instance you have to be fit, disciplined, need a lot of concentration and a lot of skill. You often see a lot of people in some sports go on to make big money in other business. This is becasue when they were playing sports it requires a lot of disciplin and concentration to make it to the top. Some sportsmen know how to work their buts off to achieve their goals. Sorry mate but sport isn't as easy as "throwing a ball into the hoop".
