It might just be recentism, but I can't ever remember anyone being as talked about as Mike Phelps is right now. He's on every news channel that I turn on. I've been rooting for the guy since the beginning, but now that he's winning it seems more people are jumping on his bandwagon (if that exists for the Olympics). Can you name someone who was talked about more at some point?

Currently he is, but the day the Olympics are over he will slowly fade away, only to be brought up again every 4 years as a stat on NBC.

Is this a joke thread? I've heard very little of him here in the UK. All I've heard is that he's, "Officially the Best Olympian in the history of the Olympics". Good for him, but that doesn't make him 'the best celeb in the World of all-time'...

That female swimmer 'Adlington' who won the gold (she'd naturally be catching British attention mind; I expect Phelps to be in tomorrow's headlines though...) and Cristiano Ronaldo...all the time (the overrated berk that he is...)

He's being talked about a lot around here in Canada, at least where I live...

Pretty much my family (Dad's side anyways) is if we get medal postions in water polo, handball, and maybe even make a stretch for basketball.

But yeah, Phelps is tanking it up. 5 gold, 5 WRs.

Phelps the biggest celeb in the world of all time? Far from it. He can set all of the records he wants and get as many gold medals he can, but just because he's the only Olympic athlete that anyone can rememberoutside of the games doesn't make him "the biggest celeb in the world."

Whenever someone says "Phelps" I always think of someone considerably different. . . . .Theokhoth

Want to know who the most famous person in history is? Jesus Christ. He is over 2000 years old. There is no detailed biography of his life and he is worshiped by around 2 billion people.

I don't know why people say that, he has the most golds, but there's a Russian gymnast who has 15 total medals; to me that would be more difficult to reach, but he could get there.

Why do you think oprah is so rich because millions and i mean MILLIONS of people watch her show and thats just advertisement money for her, even if you dont watch her show you still know who she is.

I don't know if Woods is popular elsewhere or not, but he's known everywhere that plays golf because he always wins.

I can't believe I forgot the cyclist giant, Lance Armstrong.

Maybe you should define celebrity, because everyone still knows who Armstrong is, even if he's not the most popular person. If we're doing a popularity contest, I'd have to say someone like Mother Teresa or Ghandi.

Not according to him. I wouldn't consider 27 "old", the US has a 41 year old lady this year.

TC I dont think you know the difference between popular and wellknown, it doesnt matter wat negative things other people have done, it may make them less popular but it doesnt change how well known they are, infact scandals and things like taking steroids makes people more well known. Michael may be popular in North America but the rest of the world isnt as aware or care about him. He is not as well known as you think he is and will be forgotten after the Olympics. Proffesional athletes such as Michael Jordan, Ronaldinho and Hollywood stars such as Brad Pitt and and Paris Hilton are more wellknown worldwide.

Michael Jordan, Tiger Woods & Muhammad Ali are much much more famous than Phelps. Basketball, Boxing and Golf have more impact in the current society than competitive swimming. Phelps is also a great athlete though.
