"'How do you know,' he said, 'how old Stonehenge is?' This was a rhetorical question - I didn't have to answer. He claimed that Stonehenge doesn't appear in any documentary evidence prior to the 1500s. And pointed out that the dating methods used don't date the stones, but rather the matter beneath them. We know that many Christian churches were sited on top of prehistoric remains as a way of Christianizing them - perhaps, he suggested, Stonehenge's stones were put there much later, on top of a stone age site."

Leaked Photos of NG, sensored by the MI6 show the construction of Stonehedge in 1898.

What's your take?

What's the point in constructing this and covering it up? There's no reason for it. It's not like England doesn't have enough historical sites as it is.

There have been numerous of documents showing that the Stonehenge has been around a lot longer than 1898. Earliest one was in 1440. So no, the Stonehenge isn't a hoax. The MI6 constructing it is a hoax.

Right, this is obviously a bizarre joke. well here's some links for you anyway http://www.stonehenge.co.uk/history.phphttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stonehenge Also http://www.stonehenge-stone-circle.co.uk/stone-circle.htm You do realise Stonehenge is simply the biggest one right? There is in fact thousands all over the British countryside. http://www.stone-circles.org.uk/ As Brit i can assure you the Government has far more important things to do than fake historic sites, as someone else pointed out we have enough without faking any. To even consider this is laughable.

Restoring it. For example, here is a photograph of Stonehenge taken in 1877:

The tires on that crane setup sure don't look 1800's.

Just proof we are running out of things to talk about, it used to be enough to ponder the mysteries of these things, now we have to ponder a conspiracy?

Then there is this NG article from 2009 which reads "But what in fact do they mean? Despite countless theories offered over centuries, no one knows."

1877? But wait! That is before MI6 built it?!? We have a mystery now! ;)

Stonehenge is a key element in supporting the English Exceptionalism sentiment, necessary for maintaining the British Empire in, going into the early XX century.

Stonehenge is a key element in supporting the English Exceptionalism sentiment, necessary for maintaining the British Empire in, going into the early XX century.

Ignoring the fact that Stonehenge Pre dates Christianity by a few thousand years, and ignoring the fact that MI6 wasn't established until 1909, Brittan; not just England if you are going to talk about what remains of the British empire, namely; England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, while we appreciate the culture of the ancient race of people that built Stonehenge and enjoy its history, we most certainly do not need Stonehenge to promote our exceptionalism to Europe and indeed the rest of the world, nor is it a particularly vital key to our heritage in that if it was not there, it would of course be greatly missed, mostly by the modern day Druids, historians and archaeologists; as it still studied along with the thousands of smaller stone circles and monuments dating from the same time period across Brittan. But we have so many other monuments, dating from around the same period of 4000 BC to the 1900s AD, and taking this into account and in a purely economic and cultural sense we are extremely rich and steeped in history, enough so that the loss would not be as great as it would elsewhere in the world in a similar situation.
