So, any worker knows how a customer can be objectively wrong, sometimes they want you to do something that is impossible or they want something that doesn't actually exist. That's absolutely not what I'm talking about.

If a person is a raging asshole to someone who is doing nothing more, but trying to help them, is the customer right? Or are they a bully who happens to be picking on people who have no way of defending themselves unless they want to risk what little financial security they currently have? So, is the customer always right? Or are they taking a moment to be a bully?

Customers aren't always right and the statement just means make the customer happy. Some are never going to be happy. And are in fact jackasses. Don't let them ruin your day.

If a customer is treating an employee like shit, then yes the customer is "wrong". Some businesses will actually kick customers out for treating their employees like shit. Unfortunately, way too many businesses are too chickenshit to do that and continue to let their employees continue to be treated like crap. Still doesn't make it right though.

Some people still hold on to the belief that being an asshole is the best way to get what you want. More stores should have policies that allow these types of people to be forced out from the premises and ban them.

@Serraph105: In your case I would claim they are being a bully.

'The Customer' in "the customer is always right" is not an individual, but the collective of all potential buyers. The idea here is that, if 'the customer' thinks your products suck, they'll go elsewhere. So, figure out why 'the customer' thinks your product sucks and resolve the issue.

"The customer is always right" is more of a policy than a truth. If a customer is telling a tech support guy that the problem with his phone is the display when it's clearly the battery that is at fault, the tech support guy is supposed to say "Well sir, we will take a look at the display to see if that is indeed the problem" and then proceed to look at the battery.

Pretty much this. I have a lot of respect for anyone that has to deal with customers problems. Or the general public at all, for that matter.

No, customers are not always right. Some try to push for things without knowing the policies, but as long you follow the company policies and professional knowledge, you are in safe hands.

This pretty much explains it, the misconception about the term is that they are always right in every scenario, what it actaully means is above.
