Its all a matter of opinion though. I WOULD call it one of the best films of the year. And I would love to see it at least nominated for Best Picture - whether it wins, who knows. I really do think though that Heath Ledger should win best supporting actor. He is just superb in that film. It has nothing to do with his death.
I agree that the Oscars make poor choices sometimes. Chicago winning over The Pianist - which took Actor, Director and Screenplay - is just a joke.

Other jokes come to my mind like:
The English Patient over Fargo (1996)
Shakespear in Love over Saving Private Ryan (1999)
Crash over Good Night, Good Luck or Brokeback Mountain (2005)
i respectfully disagree with you that the dark knight wasnt the best movie of the year :P
i dont think it will win best pic, but i think it deserves best supporting actor for heath and NOT becouse hes dead. i think he trully deserves it, also best score and director
We all know Robert Downey Jr should win best supporting actor.smerlus
For some reason I can't stand him. I don't want to dislike him but whenever I see him in a movie I just get annoyed.
Its all opinion, you call it hype but critic wise it is one of the higest rated films of the year, percent wise, even higher then Slumdog Millionaire. It has a higher rating then almost every film in the last 8 years to win the best picture award. So the film does have hype, but that wouldnt be the reason why they would think it is god enough to stand with the rest of the possible best picture noms. Any top ten list this year even have it in the top 5. There is more to The Dark Knight then hype, and because you personally dont find it the best pic of the year, doesnt mean thats why it might win. Critics actually really liked it, many even think it deserves to be in there top ten of the year, like No Country For Old Men, or The Departed probably every best picture winner was for their respect years..SaintLeonidasClever boy.
I think, because of the hype surrounding it (not to mention its pure awesomeness), it's going to win quite a few. Look at Lord of the Rings: Return of the King. Yeah, it was good, and it's my favorite, but it won mostly because of the hype. 3eyedrazorbackLook what it was up against: Master and Commander, Lost in Translation, Seabiscuit and Mystic River. The only outcome was a sweep.
Anyway, I think it'll go in the other direction for The Dark Knight; Heath will get a nomination, Nolan might, but that's it.

Have you seen all of those films? Master and Commander and particularly Mystic River are masterful films.Which films do you feel were better?DivergeUnify
A few actually, also I do think nominating dark knight for best picture isnt a bad choice, its the winning I am against. Here are a few films I personally prefer though
Let The Right one in
Everlasting Moments
The Fall
Milk
Frost/Nixon
In Bruges
Waltz with Bashir
Happy Go Lucky
Boy in the striped pajamas
Slumdog millionaire
Che
Changeling
Synedoche New York
The Reader
Frozen river
Nobel Son
There are more I probably forgot.

I wouldnt call it awful, I honestly thought that Saving Private Ryan is pretty overrated. There were better films than those 2 for that year. Festen, Run Lola Run, Life is Beautiful, Rushmore, Happiness, Gods and Monsters, The Thin Red Line, Dark City, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, The Big Lebowski, A Simple Plan,Afterlife, and Black Cat White Cat.

Good opinions create hype. That's why the film is so good.

^This. Chicago winning over The Pianist was one of the biggest flukes in Oscar history (not as bad, though, as Shakespeare in Love winning over Saving Private Ryan--that was an absolute disgrace).

...Mystic River was a spectacular movie, what are you talking about? It either should have won best picture or Clint Eastwood should have won best director for it. Master and Commander was decent, although Mystic River was definitely better (and Sean Penn was better than Russell Crowe).

Mystic River is a very good film, really shows how Clint Eastwood has Matured as a director.
Slumdog Millionaire should win best picture IMHO. But a part of me wishes to see Dark Knight win something.Rikardur
I wouldnt mind if Heath won best supporting actor, cant think of any other award the film should get though. Each other catagory has a film that does better in that catagory.

Chicago was such a bad film, I dont get the hype for it.
It won't get nominated for Best Picture. That, I'm sure of. And rightfully so. It doesn't deserve it. It was great, yeah, but not best picture great.dreDREb13
glad you agree, there are too many other great films out this year. The only reason I care about the Oscars is to maybe see some smaller films get some recognition once in a while, and heck maybe an award or two. otherwise I dont care, its just celebs giving each other awards and patting each other on the back. Occasionaly a smaller film gets some recognition, or maybe even a foreign film, which helps those involved get more recognition. Since I am working on being a director I like to see the little guy get something even if he never usually does. They never usually choose films I like anyway, Let the right one in for example is going to get totally ignored because it didnt get enough press.
[QUOTE="Film-Guy"][QUOTE="Legacy_of_Gamef"]IMO, It will win an Oscar.zakkro
Ah but which Oscar?
Best... Superhero Movie with... Batman >.>I meant which Oscar as in best picture, director etc silly:P. Also i think Superhero movie and Disaster movie this year had batman in them, so they win best movie with batman.

Yeah, I agree. I'm a fan of indie films. But I never really watch them anymore, so I guess I don't have a good place to talk... But I still wish There Will Be Blood won Best Picture last year...I was fine with No Country for Old men winning, I would have preferred There Will Be Blood but either is good.

Yeah. They were both superb, but I was just much more a fan of There Will Be Blood. Not to mention the soundtrack being phenomenal. Jonny Greenwood is a god.His score had no chance of winning anything though since he didnt write the majority of it. Still a great score, though Nick Cave's score for The Assassination of jesse james by the coward robert ford was better imo. The score to there will be blood tried too hard at times to sound unique.
