Right now I have this massive virus problem on my PC, where a virus keeps showing up later on in the day no matter how many virus scans I perform, along with several other odd symptoms. Everything's working fine right now but just wait until it acts up later. Anyway, I chatted with a Geek Squad analyst online and he said I have what is called a Rootkit infection, after taking a look into my computer and discovering plenty of nasty malware within my drive. Anyway, he says he can fix the problem right from where he is, but at a hefty price: $169.99. This was a bit of a slap to my face but I'm just wondering, is the Geek Squad overpriced and am I just better off taking it somewhere like Gipetto? At the same time I really want this issue fixed and this guy knows exactly what's wrong and how to take care of my issue right over the air from where he is. But I've been hearing that the Squad is overpriced and am starting to think that this just may be the case here.

Please let me know if the Geek Squad really is overpriced.

They are pretty damn overpriced. I remember going there for a fix and being surprised with the price they said it would cost too.

I've boycotted Best Buy ever since it took them 2 months to put a new hard-drive on my laptop.

It would be cheaper to just take everything off your hard drive (put it on memory sticks, or get an external hard drive) then reset your computer.

That seems to be way too high of a price IMO. Hell it would be cheaper to just buy an external hard drive, back up all your information on that, and just reformat.

The remote support is actually cheaper than the in-store price. But if you're talking rootkits, don't even bother with repairs. Just reformat the hard drive and reinstall the OS.

Geek squad is very overpriced almost to the point of wanting to file sexual assault charges. Your best bet(if you can't fix it yourself) is to get a mom and pop computer shop to fix it.

Just reinstall windows. You really dont want to mess with rootkits. (If you dont care about possibly killing your computer you could try combofix.)

Yes they are. I pretty much do all the work for my computers now (even though I don't have my certification :(). It sounds like you need to reinstall your OS.

They're grossly overpriced, and they tend to be pretty useless as well. As others have said, you're best off backing up any important files (important as in financial documents, not important as in your limewire library), reformatting your harddrive and re-installing Windows.

Don't take it to Geek Squad, they aren't good. I don't know what the American Equivalent would be, but in Canada we have a place called Canada Computers which is good for things like this.

Haha that's crazy. Believe it or not I purchased my PS3 and HDTV from Circuit City (back when it existed) and the guy from there came and installed both things for free. I even felt like I could've done it myself, so this is just unbelievable. I just wonder how much set-up is without the deal....

Well, they charge $100 to connect a game console, something that just about any male child over the age of ten years could do in about thirty seconds, so...yeah, just a bit overpriced.

They gave better deals, but BB was more appealing and looked better (if that made sence). CC was always giving out deals trying to compete and they just couldn't keep up with BB.

I would take it to the Geek Squad... I got a virus on facebook and it cost 200 dollars to fix... They are professionals and know computers.. Do not care about the price they get stuff done! They can do a checkup for 75 dollars... Interesting people good service nothing is FREE!

and yes, Geek Squad is way over priced as everyone else has already said, and i think it's do to them not having much compitition since, afaik, they are the largest computer repair service, or at lest the most known...which saddens me

Almost everything they do is way overpriced. I've heard of a few things people have gotten done reasonably though. If you are in any moderate size town at all, I'm sure there's a small computer repair shop that would only charge you $50 or so.

Honestly, if I can't fix it there is no way someone there can. Unless magically there are super smartass UNIX users... which would make them overqualified.

Yeah, they are overpriced and sometimes completely useless. I brought my computer in last year because of a bad virus. I had to erase everything from my computer, which involved the simple click of an OK button. For them to do that, it was going to cost 200 bucks. I ended up doing it myself

omg I bought this thing at Best Buy and had to take it 3-4 times already in five years. Last week they said both of my hard drives were defective, but they could fix it if I bought a new hdd (60 or so) and gave them 139.99. Total rip.
