Yeah, when dealing with mathematics (and only occasionally, by the way). But it's not a mathematical question. There aren't even exact measurements on the glass or the liquid contained therein, so applying a mathematical procedure is somewhat pointless - it would literally be guesswork. It's not to be taken literally as a measurement of one half, it's an approximation.
After asking a maths teacher, go ask a philosophy teacher, too.
