I was frankly really surprised by it. it's not his whole life, it's mostly based around the passing of the 13th amendment to the constitution - which effectively banned slavery. Granted it does play a positive light for Lincoln, but it's really not the rah rah sophmoric telling that the advertisements showed. There is a bit of humor, there's drama, you see how politics often got done back then, there's a bit of war scenes. My main gripe really is how they keep playing on the slavery issue in a lot of unrelated scenes. I understand it's the central premise of the film, but they kind of overplay it a bit.
the acting is superb. Daniel Day Lewis really nailed it in portraying Lincoln - the man, not the legend. Which is this little bit high-pitched soft spoken guy, who liked to tell jokes, often self-deprecating ones, and tell random stories. Watching the film, and remembering why Lincoln is often remembered as one of the greatest American presidents, reminded me of a sad fact. the man would never of gotten elected in todays world, we'd rob ourselves of the opportunity of having someone with his kind of leadership.
yes the film does occasionally fall into the Spielberg trappings, but quite frankly Spielberg's cliches are pretty rare on the modern landscape of films, and they haven't really bothered me that much.
I just walked out of the film feeling very satisfied, i laughed at some of the political ironies and humor (which again i didn't expect), and i was moved at times when they were pushing hard to pass the amendment. you know it's gonna pass already, it's just a mark of a good movie when you forget that fact and really get lost in the scene/moment.
This is THE Abraham Lincoln movie. it's a good one.

sweet.
Just cheked Wiki also, movie got very positive reviews and even Daniel Day Lewis is being a considered for academy award for his awesome acting. I'm tottally gonna watch it. personally always enjoyed steven speilberg movies as well.
Thanks a lot for your information :)
I still don't see why Peter is trying to get 3 movies out of that short of a book. Even with dipping into the LOTR supplementary material it's going to be a lot of filler. They really should have just kept it 2 movies.
[QUOTE="tenaka2"]
compared to lotr the hobbit is a very short book, I'm guessing a lot of filler.

Or shorter films, or a fair amount of new content. I heard the third film has something to do about a piece of literature that was posted in the back of the Return of the King book.
Yeah. The Hobbit takes place about 60 years before the Lord of the Rings, so I think some of the Hobbit movies will show stuff that happens in between the two stories (I think I've read that they plan on showing Saruman falling under Sauron's influence via the Palantir). I think they're also gonna show stuff that happened in the background of the Hobbit (i.e things that were only mentioned but no shown in the Hobbit), particularly the White Council's attack on Dol Guldur (which I suppose the White Council thinks was a victory since they drove Sauron out of Dol Guldur, but in reality he just returned to Mordor and ended up sending two Nazgul to re-occupy Dol Guldur a few years later). Maybe they'll show Sauron's return to Mordor and his rebuilding of Barad-Dur. They could show Gollum sneak into Mordor and get captured, though the Lord of the Rings already briefly showed Gollum being tortured/interrogated in Mordor. It will be the worst movie of 2012 because of the 27 poor innocent little non-human animals that died preventable deaths...
I believe the outraged animal wranglers that immediately quit working on the Hobbit, and then waited 2 whole years to finally spill the beans on the horrible things that happened to the animals. The fact that this breaking news came to light years after the fact, and soon before The Hobbit is released lends credence to these claims.
In other news, I will watch The Hobbit in theaters, and see if it lives up to the hype. I for one, hope it does.
it will likely be popular I wont go see it though I hated the lord of the rings books and movies *read the books long before the moves were even thought of* I'v also read the hobbit.
I dont understand how tolkien is popular.
Nah Django unchained will be the best movie this yearMy instincts say The Hobbit going to be best movie of 2012, going to win many academy awards again like LOTR.
The Hobbit > The Avengers. The Dark Knight Rises.Skyfall ETC as no other movies released this year even comes close to the epicness and grandeur of J.R Tolkeins saga.
Can't wait for 15Th DEC, what about you guys?

...no one can say whether it will be the "best movie of the year" considering that is all based on personal opinion. In terms of Oscars, it has a chance at a lot of technical nominations and maybe BP, but will have a very hard time winning any of them up against Lincoln, Les Miserables and Argo.SaintLeonidasThe story about Lincoln/the Civil War/13th amendment is overdone to the point of being hackneyed.

Um okay, not that I care what you thought, but in the end it is what the Academy thinks that matters come Oscar season and so far Lincoln is the leading contender.
[QUOTE="rage_lawry"]animals were actually killed during that movieLaihendi
That is a malicious lie being spread to sabotage the film.Don't believe it.
Anyways I'm expecting these movies the be the greatest things I've seen since the LOTR films.

Although I'm expecting the LOTR films to be better than the Hobbit, since I liked the LOTR books better. As much as I love the franchise I can't see it being the best movie this year. The movie is two and a half hours long and only the first in a three parter. I just feel like there wasn't enough in the book to justify that. They're either going to have to fudge the lore or stretch the plot as thin as it can be.
I don't think I will enjoy it more than Skyfall or TDKR but who knows, it may surprise me.
Living in Middle Earth, the scenery doesn't really do it for me anymore.
From who, the two-year old committee?I doubt it, Avengers is probably going to win that award
