I think signs of the decadence started more than 10 years ago. It shares some similarities with the fall of the Roman Empire.kuraimenYou mean with all the tribes waging war along the borders of the split empire and all that.

(Did you know Romans had hamburger bars like a kind of McDonalds?) No I mean the loss of moral authority, the increase and reliance on military power in the end, the immigrations of people unwilling to embrace the culture within the empire, the increasingly useless political authorities and yes having half the enemy within their territory and using them to protect the borders from the other half.

Well all those things are in a much worse state in Europe, so I don't think you have to worry about it reaching those proportions for a while. If stuff hits the fan here I'll be sure to post about it in Off-Topic.

Long live the Roman Empire! ...
"I found Rome a city of brick and left it a city of marble" i think i might take nero's spot and play a little tune as the fires spread.[QUOTE="KungfuKitten"][QUOTE="kuraimen"] No I mean the loss of moral authority, the increase and reliance on military power in the end, the immigrations of people unwilling to embrace the culture within the empire, the increasingly useless political authorities and yes having half the enemy within their territory and using them to protect the borders from the other half.kuraimenWell all those things are in a much worse state in Europe, so I don't think you have to worry about it reaching those proportions for a while. I agree Europe is in a bad state but Europe, for example, is not increasing its military power in a way to maintain hegemony because they are not the main world power. I think that is a crucial factor. You might be right. Though I don't know. Most of the EU is practically the USA. There are very few who wouldn't go along with the USA. Leaders in EU don't actually care about what they are doing anyway. They have a little Berlusconi within them saying; 'party with nude women!'
I'd say education isn't doing its job in any western country. Safe for maybe Denmark? Don't know about Denmark, they have a very peculiar educational system. Our education system isn't doing it's job...

I'm so happy cause my country's dollar is so much higher now against the US :D
I just hope it lasts long enough for me to buy all the things I want on Amazon.
Get over it or be a politician. The only way this country is going to get better is if the people who live in it decide to move forward with their lives and move towards jobs that will be profitable and important in this country. Globalization is now violently pushing people into unemployment and the only way to move forward is to adapt. Go to school and find something that you enjoy and can keep as a job till you retire. If you settle for anything less you take your chances.
I wouldn't say so. The Great Depression was a much worse event and the US actually became much better when it was all over, turning into a big world super power and everything once WWII ended.
Of course I think China is probably going to be number 1, but they kind of cheated. Seriously, China is just one big human rights violation in the shape of a country, that economy isn't getting boosted through humane means or anything.
A countries "greatness" can come and go. It all depends on the way it is governed and the people who inhabit it. At the moment I would say the US has a huge problem with the backwards attitudes and selfishness of the powerful people who run it, but perhaps that is partly due to the idea of the "american dream" which nowadays seems a slightly out dated concept imo. Either way I believe your countries greatness is not over, just suppressed at the moment.WollsYeah, the concepts of abstract things like freedom and the American Dream have been placed on a pedestal and then distorted beyond recognition.
I do feel and see the USA going on the decline (around me i see friends getting fired or cannot find decent paying jobs).
I also feel that Fareed Zakaria is right that it is not the downfall of the US but rather the rise of the Rest as he phrases it.
Asia, Middle East, several African countries even, South and Latin America and Eastern Europe are all doing much better then they were 20 years ago. and things on the whole for most of these countries are looking good in their futures.
unemployement is an issue i'm hearing not exclusive to the West either, and that is something that rather puzzles me.
I'm not an economist so i don't know for certain how you expand that in an ever growing population and an ever automated working world.
Also all countries come down from greatness, it is only a matter of time. There are no exceptions.
