Quantum computing is probably the future.

i have no idea what this means, but it sounds interesting. anyway you can explain it in more simpler terms? :P

What about computations using organic chemistry or DNA computing? Know anything about that?

I know Quantum computing, as already mentioned, seems to be the most promising direction to take. Now this is assuming physicist and engineers of today don't come up with a brilliant solution to keep using silicon. But quantum computing is insanely complex. I joked about it with a friend that the day quantum computing takes over is the day I feel sorry for computer science students.

For example, a bit with today's processors is represented by ither a 1 or a 0. That's it. A bit, or qubit in quantum terms, can be a 1 or 0, but it can also be or a 1 and a 0. It works on probability. Really nasty stuff. You'd need some kind of degree in mathematics or quantum physics before you could understand most of it.

But the potential is pretty amazing. From what I understand, quantum algorithms hare FAR superior to old fashioned regular ones we all use today.

Transistors which make up the processor in your computer can only get so small. The reason we have smartphones as powerful as 5-10 year old computers is because transistors keep getting smaller and smaller. But they can only get so small before they no longer work. We are rapidly approaching this wall.

Just to hype quantum computing a little bit: "Assume I hide a ball in a cabinet with a million drawers. How many drawers do you have to open to find the ball? Sometimes you may get lucky and find the ball in the first few drawers but at other times you have to inspect almost all of them. So on average it will take you 500,000 peeks to find the ball. [Basic probability. If a ball is randomly put in a drawer, on average it will take 500,000 checks to find it]. Now a quantum computer can perform such a search looking only into 1000 drawers. This mind boggling feat is known as Grover's algorithm."

I believe there are whole new realms of technology we haven't even begun to discover yet.

Yes, for example, the mass effect core.

If we knew the answer to that question then we would probably be omniscient.

I read an article where scientists voluntarily stopped working on a mutated bird flu virus because it basically scared the sh-- out of them. They were afraid the airborne version would escape and prompt a Contagion movie like result. They also refuse to post any study material for fear of someone getting their hands on it to use as a weapon.

When I see things like that technology really scares me.

Especially the Large Hadron Collider.

The f---ing scientists want to recreate the events at the Big Bang. WTF ?

The ultimate limit would be a machine that does whatever we want, however we want, where ever we want and when ever we want. The machine with the power of everything. I don't think that would happen though. I think innovation will always continue, there won't be a limit, but yes, it will slow down, like the curve of a graph, it keeps on increasing, but the gradient keeps decreasing, and yet it never actually stops increasing or touches an axis.

This reminds me of some dude in Russia, can't remember his name, but he tried to make human-chimpanzee hybrids. Would have loved to see the outcome. :P Too bad people stopped him because they were scared or something... It's not like Rise of the Planet of the Apes is going to happen... >.>

They're only recreating the conditions of the Big Bang. It's not like they are creating a giant explosion that would blow half the earth apart. It's incredible for the study of particle physics and cosmology.

I doubt it. Just eventual slowdown, which we're already seeing now.

Pirate700

We are? Looks like the opposite to me.

When was the last time we had a major tech revolution, like the phone, or the computer, or the tv, or the airplane, or the Internet? Everything now is just making what we have, better.

Smart phone in my opinion is pretty high. Its everything in the palm on ur hands.

But as Pirate said, thats "just making what we have better" it's nothing NEW  Cars? simply carriages without horses. just an "improvement" Email? simply an improvement on pigeons.
