No it is too separate State and Church as institutions, there is no separation between Church and Civil Society, nor do Church and state refuse to acknowledge each other.

well do congress convene on muslim holidays, then? that would be seperation between mosque and civil society. :|

[QUOTE="xaos"] I bet that making up goofy mega-partisan hypotheticals makes for the true spirit of Christmasguynamedbilly

It's not my fault Reid and Obama choose to run the country in a very hyperpartisan way!

As true as that may be, The President doesn't punch the time cards of the Congress and Senate. I imagine it's the leaders of the Democrat party pushing their members to get it done, and the Republicans and Independents just have to go along for the ride to make sure a vote isn't taken while they are absent.

I hope the bill fails, just so the Party leaders will be punished for their disrespect. What's the big rush anyway?

No, just your fault for dancing to their tune. Edit: And it's nice to know that partisanship is exclusive to the Dems

I thought partisanship was exclusive to Republicans. Democrats can't be partisan because they're just sticking to their principles.

the same side that asks for "more time to debate" should not be the ones asking to get out early.

No. This is a secular nation, after all. If Congress were to start adjourning for Christmas, they'd have to adjourn for holidays like Rosh Hashanah, Kwanzaa, Ramadan, Diwali, and all the other religious holidays of all the other religions represented in the United States. They wouldn't ever be in session.

are we really being asked to feel sorry for upper middle class to rich ppl who have excellent public health insurance and lots of vacations a year? most working ppl are still working on Christmas Eve with or without any of the benefits and being paid much less.

[QUOTE="sSubZerOo"] Regardless, with pressing times like this.. THEY chose to run for poltiical office, they should never expect to have a garenteed day off on a specific day, their jobs for the good of the state and country are too important for that.. Especially during this past decade.sSubZerOo

I agree that there should be no such thing a "guaranteed" congressional holiday. However, provided things are progressing adequately, I don't find it unreasonable that they be given a day off. People eventually need some down time.

Federal politicians get some of the longest break times out there..

My mistake. Didn't really think much about it.

It's good they're working on Christmas Eve. They were supposed to be finished months ago but kept bickering over the health care bill, so now they get to pay the price. It's good to see our politicians actually getting something done for once instead of going "lol, we're out of session, we'll get around to it next year k?"

It is one thing to pass a bill on a Christian Holiday. It is another thing to pass a bill that contains provisions that are offensive to Christians on Christmas Eve. That would be like decided to get rid of Affirmative Action on Martin Luther King Day, or Invading Iraq on Ramadan, it shows insensitivity and arrogance.

'Politically correct' is the better term. The reasonable and equal thing would be for the Congress to adjourn for the holidays its constituents believe in. I'm sure that they have different faiths, but I doubt that every faith has its representative.

So you would have the government follow Christian tenants? It would be politically correct for the government to break for all religious holidays if they're going to break for Christmas, yes. The problem with that being the Congress wouldn't be in session ever, as I said. Besides that, our government is supposed to represent every single American, not just those who believe in Christianity. Breaking for all the major Christian-related holidays while either not breaking or breaking for few of the holidays reserved for those who practice Judaism, Islam, or any other religion seems to me like the government favors Christians over the people of all other faiths.

Yeah, you're right, Jesus wouldn't have wanted everyone to have healthcare. That's why he always turned away people who needed to be healed and told people who wanted their loved ones to be resurrected to "**** off". Oh, except for people who paid him. He really loved money, which was why he gave his official endorsement to temple vendors and is quoted as saying that "it is easier for a donkey to pass through the eye of a needle than for a poor man to get into heaven".

Maybe the bill as a whole is not offensive to Christians, but after doing some research I have found some parts of it are very offensive to Christians.
