Isnt it frustrating living with a computer illiterate family? They always ask me to do something on the computer for them and never learn to do it themselves. They still dont know how to email after we got the internet like 10 years ago. Im sort of burned out on them asking me to do everything. Even if they offered me $100 to do something I have a hard time doing it for them. My cousins ex asked me to put his car on craigslist and he'll give me $100 bucks if it sells. I guess I'll do it if im in the mood. Plus I had to drive 10 miles just to tell my cousin that her blu-ray player doesnt have netflix.

Yea, my dad and step-mom are incapable of learning anything at all on the computer. My dad still doesn't know how to attach images to an email even though I've shown him like 10 times and my younger brother shown him about 30 times. :|

Yeah. I mean how do they think I learned all this stuff? No one taught me. They call it help but it isn't really help if you have to do everything. Thanks for your help? More like thanks because I am too lazy to learn! I am going to be transferring next year to university so they better learn or it will never get done. :P

I kind of enjoy it, actually. It allows me to try things like a LinuxMCE setup because no one else wants to try.

Still, I'll have to get my son involved in a couple years.

Its frustrating when they WERE computer literate, know a hell more about computers than I did when I was young, but seem to forget all the simple things (Cut and pasting, creating folders) as time goes on despite being on the computer everyday. and they turn around and ask me how to do said simple task over and over again.....

We should all get our families a Basic Computing for the Illiterate book for Christmas. Now, if they still ask after that then they are being super lazy. :P

I have the same problem with my mom. Despite me showing her how to do something countless times she always calls me to do it for her. Well she can send emails by herself now although she's not quite yet at the attaching stage yet. And there was the lady, a neighbour of mine that took COMPUTER LESSONS and still doesn't know basic computer navigation. You really can't teach an old dog new tricks, well most of them anyway.

I didn't think there was any need. My parents used to be so technophobic that I could have stored all my best plunder in a folder on the desktop called "computer stuff", and they would have been none the wiser.

Computer illiterate people trying to use computers in general is incredible frustrating. Thankfully everybody who lives in my house is fully computer literate, but my dad (who I don't live with) isn't and the other day I had to spend 30 minutes on the phone with him just trying to walk him through updating his Adobe flash player. :|

YES I have the same problem. I'm ALWAYS getting calls from family members to do this or that and no matter how many times I show them, they still don't bother learning it and always rely on me. Even stupid stuff like opening a PDF or for god sake saving a freaking word document.

I like it because everything they ask me to do is very simple, but amazing to them. My dad told me his laptop's wifi wasn't working for weeks. I go back home for the weekend and he tells me this. I take a look at it and flip the wifi switch back to "on." He was so happy. :)

I only find it annoying when it's something I know that they know how to do because they have done it many times in the past.

edit it's really only my dad though. My Mom knows most things and very very rarely needs my help and it's usually pretty advanced stuff which I actually find fun since I don't get the shot to try that stuff under most normal circumstances.

Wow, and I though my parents (well my mom, dad can do most things well) was computer illiterate. All I was ever asked to do was either burn/backup cds, back up hdd data, and I am usually called when either an unexpected pop up comes up, or something does not seem to work. Granted the unexpected pop-ups are simple, sometimes ads, sometimes a program asking if it can be updated.

I don't live with anyone computer illiterate. Every once in a while my sister will email me about a problem she is having with her computer, but it isn't really annoying because she usually trys to fix it herself first (usually resulting in more harm than good, but hey, at least she tried :P). And she is my sister and we live thousands of miles away from each other, so I don't really mind.

But I did the mistake of fixing my neighbors computer once, and now every single time she has a computer "problem" she asks me to help (which happens way too often), and I'm kind of incapable of saying no. It does kind of annoy me that she doesn't even try to find the answer herself. Most of the time, if it isn't something simple, I just search google for the solution anyway.

How ironic, my mom is asking me to go and help her send an email at this very moment /eye roll.

To answer your question its incredibly frustrating. I can deal with helping someone but when they fail to learn anything each and everytime and instead just rely on me to do it for them... thats what bugs me

I've been the "computer guy" for family and kin since the mid-80's. So, not really. You get used to it. Some of them also know more than what they show. They just like me doing stuff for them.

Not so much my family, but more people in my office (since I'm the office technical help). They come to me at work with their home computer problems. One lady kept having BSODs on her home PC, and it took a few minutes of questions to find out that she was using a light switch to turn off the power to the PC every time.
