[QUOTE="Bourbons3"] That message has sure been effective in preventing suicide in the past  The project contributes to people growing up more confident. It tells them that there is hope, there are plenty of gay people who have great lives, and that being gay is perfectly normal - no matter what people around you tell you. In a lot of cases, these YouTube videos are some of the very few sources of positive messages gay kids will encounter.Omni-Slash
If that message was so helpful these problems wouldn't persist...cause god knows it's on every TV channel and everywhere you look... words from people who don't know you may help a few....but fall upon deaf ears for the majority...the effort would probably be better served helping parents with children whom are gay learn how to discuss things openly and freely so there may be some meaningful positive reinforcement.....

All it takes is one person. I have no idea how things would be for me right not if it weren't for the Trevor Project.

TV in the US, at least, can be a lot better for this sort of thing. And even if it were better, its impact is limited by a whole host of discriminatory laws and bigoted politicians and public officials. Kurt on Glee and Will & Grace is only going to have so much impact. Videos by regular people describing how being gay is not an obstacle to a successful life has a a bigger effect.

obviously this is all my opinion....but when it comes to this stuff...teh people that it helps are those that would be tough enough to make it anyway even wihtout the help....(it's that thing that self help only really helps those that have the inner strength anyway)....I just feel like resources are misplaced when it comes to this stuff....

I think it's a great project and I'm glad that a company like Google is getting involved.

But, I have a feeling this will never air in my area.

[QUOTE="Theokhoth"]I love this movement. I'm so glad people are finally recognizing what gay teens (and gays in general) go through. People poo-pooing it should just shut their ears and go away.MrGeezer

Or what EVERYONE in general has to go through.

Yeah...as if the gays and the lesbians are the only ones gettied bullied? Please, don't make me laugh. Bullies who want to pick out a difference in order to make themselves feel superior will pick out ANY difference. They are looking for WEAKNESS, not GAYS.

In high school, I spent the entire time with numerous opnly gay people, and I got bulliewd more than any of them. Why? Because the openly gay people were POPULAR, so they had strength behind them. If those kids were bullied to any serious degree, people would actually give a ****. I WASN'T popular. I had no social support, and was therefore WEAKER than the openly gay people. So people bullied the **** out of me, because no one would give a ****.

Bullies are NOT out to kick the asses of gays. Bullies are mostly looking for THE WEAK. Bullying gays only works when the gay person is weak (either physically socially). Otherwise, you go after someone WHO IS WEAK. Being gay is just a side-concern, in most cases.

Hence this complete disproportionate number of gay teens committing suicide to straight teens.

The project is meant for more than just bullied kids. Straight kids aren't kicked out of heir homes because they're attracted to certain people. They don't have to worry about getting punched or thrown out of a public bar for kissing their loved ones. The word "straight" is not used as an insult on a daily basis. A straight person doesn't have to fight to be recognized as a human being entitled to equality.

If you don't like the movement, shut your ears and go away. Because neither it nor the gays are going to.

There's been a massive spike in suicides among gay students in lieu of Proposition 8, DADT repeal, and other things. Gays are finally getting their rights, and homophobes are lashing back at them. So there's more gay suicides than usual. One teen killed himself after his entire neighborhood refused to acknowledge him as a human being.

Lots of companies have been doing videos. As has become clear in this thread, this is the first one a lot of people have seen. So if it takes a big company like Google to get this thing on national TV where people can see it, so be it.

Yep. There's Apple, Pixar, Microsoft, Facebook, and of course Google, among many others such as GAP, Yahoo, and Cisco. The Trevor Project also has support from President Obama, the White House staff, and even Canada.

Straight kids get kicked out of their homes all the time, for a ****load of reasons. That's secondary to how persecuted the kid feels.

Sure, the word "straight" isn't used daily as an insult, but the word "n*****" sure as hell is. I've heard that **** all the ****ing time and never got aropund to offing myself, so don't even try to lay some special claim to being the most persecuted.

As far as the disproportionate numbers of gay kids committing suicide, please cite me a credible source which shows a causal link between gay bullying and gay suicides.

Is it just me, or did way too many of the people in that video seem like a stereotypical gay person? High-pitched voices, make-up, etc. I was under the impression they were trying to lose that image.

You were under the wrong impression. It's people who are like that who are more likely to get bullied, and more likely to need reassurance.

Straight people aren't persecuted because they're straight. Or as someone else put it recently: "No one in the history of the world has ever been ashamed of being straight. No one has had rights denied to them just because they were straight. No one has been made to feel worthless just because they were straight. No one has been told they were going to hell just because they were straight. No one has been ostracized from their family just because they were straight. No one has been beaten, murdered, or driven to suicide just because they were straight-or because people assumed they were straight." And the n-word is used too often, I agree. So is the (censored) f-word, so is dyke the negative use of the words queer and gay and other homophobic slurs. But black people don't face legal barriers to equality anymore. Nobody has to "come out" as black. Black people have far better support networks than gay people, because they don't have the the problem gay kids have of being the only person in the school like them. If a teacher hears a genuinely racist comment, that student is punished. That doesn't happen so much with homophobia. A lot of people still see homophobia as an acceptable form of prejudice - or fail to acknowledge it as prejudice at all.

If a teacher punishes a bully for making a racial slur against a minority (for the sake of argument, let's assume it's a black kid), then that black kid IS GETTING HIS ASS BEATEN after school.

And again, I think you're trying to confuse the issue. At a given school, a bully might bully the hell out of one gay kid while completely ignoring another. And I've already addressed this. Straight kids don't get bullied for being straight, they get bullied for being WEAK. Gay kids also largely get bullied because they are peceieved as being WEAK. This is why two gay kids can attend the exact same ****ing classes with only one of those gay kids getting bullied.

You're failing to understand what makes bullies tick. Usually, bullies are looking for a weak target. It's not a fair fight, that's why we call them bullies. They're usually not gonna go after a gay guy "just because" if that gay guy is cool enough for people to care that he got his ass kicked.

Bit odd, but damn, Google is smart for tying its web browser to such emotional moments and the web in general.
