It is scary the way we are losing our privacy

So I came across another one of those facebook statuses warning of a potential violation of privacy. Out of curiosity, I decided to go and check out this site that the post was warning about and wow, I am actually a little frightened here.

The site is called spokeo.com, and this site just posts a ton of personal info without your permission.

While mine managed to fail to snag a pic somehow and also has my PREVIOUS adress (from before my move last summer), it apparently is offering subscribers to the site acess to such info as my adress, who my relatives are, marital status, MY FREAKING ESTIMATED INCOME, and it even seems like it goes on to give acess to your profiles on social site.

Like seriously, I have to ask how in the hell this **** is even legal and where they even got some of this info (because I haver never listed my relatives anywhere).

If I choose to put up my info voluntarily on a site, that is my perogative, but to sit here and try and collect all this data on me and just offer it and make money off my info is jsut disgusting.

Anyone else think this is messed up?

I find it weird that not only do they have me listed, they have my dad's name associated right with me. Cool. Along with the information of my page they have the value of my dad's house, my relationship status, and age? Wat?

It's not very accurate. Only my informal name generates results, and supposedly I'm married living with only my parents.

I don't like the idea that people can go and just put up this info without my consent. I may not be doing anything wrong, but this is putting crap out there that doesn't need to be out there. Suppossedly this thing even posts your ******* credit score...

I actually do have some reason to not want my adress up there. My father has been in prison since I was 14 (I am 22 now) and I am done with him as far as I am concerned. I don't want him finding me when he gets out.

Hell, my mom has actually been worried about his state of mind when he comes out. She is afraid he might be a bit crazy and could possibly be violent because she divorced him after he went to prison. Now this info is posted up for him to find without our consent and that is just wrong.

And this is all made worse by the fact that these people are making MONEY by handing out our information like this...

My phone number and annual income is incredibly incorrect (assuming thats what that meant). I WISH I was making half a mil a year. They have no pic but I'd be really weirded out if they did because I have no pics of me on my computer nor have I ever uploaded one onto the web, so that would indicate they snuck into my house and got it.

In all honesty I think the likelyhood someone will use this is sorta unlikely? To bother with it they'd sorta already need to know stuff about you. And you don't need this site to find out someones number or address by just their name. The part that does sound fishy and disturbing is where they essentially offer personal info like hobbies about me.

I'd also like to mention that, according to their "privacy" statement, they will remove your listing if you send them your email and the url of the listing.

I'm tempted to since I am a paranoid individual and this unnerves me. Though I've no garuntee they'll do it.

Anyway you should know by now that any information that you give to a company is not yours anymore.
It's not exactly a secret...

What you need to do instead of panic, is accept that privacy is coming to an end fast (saves on curtains too) and that the most detailed information can shift balance between the people and the government. You need to make sure, that the people know as much of the government, as the government knows about its people.

EDIT: Also, there's 191 people in the USA with my name. But I found myself. They found the wrong house, but the right address, and everything else is right. Except I don't have two mothers. And I'm not married. Travel and cooking are not my hobbies. I do not own a house estimated at $66,694. I'm also not in my mid twenties, I'm turning 20 this year.

There's no such thing as privacy in America. Somebody or someone always has to get your personal information or background information and sometime that stuff gets out. Whether you sign up for something or apply for a job there is always a chance of your info getting out there. No reason to panic but it still isnt fair if you don't want your info floating around out there.
