Even though I've been married 11 years and have never cheated I strongly disagree. There are enough laws, and what goes on between spouses should stay there, out of the judicial system.btaylor2404

As I posted earlier, if the military decides to prosecute an adultery charge, you could serve up to two years and be branded a felon.

Not saying it's prevalent or anything, but the charge is on the books.

I believe it's there due to public perception of the military - I haven't heard of anyone being charged.

[QUOTE="hiphops_savior"] Adultery hurts your spouse, your wallet and your children. It is a selfish act based purely on lust. It doesn't mean the offender would get stoned, but I know a friend of mine who's married told me that it would suck if she finds out her husband is cheating on her.hiphops_savior

The government has no right to tell me who I can/can't have sex with (within certain parameters, of course. The person in question must be willing, and of legal age), and when I'm allowed/not allowed to have sex. Letting the government control our love lives is insane.

Instead of twisting my words and making it sound like I'm advocating for the government to tell people who they can have sex with, realize that all I'm saying is that there are consequences if you commit adultery, whether from the law, morality, or within the family.

I never said you were supporting the government controlling our sex lives. I simply responded to your post, which agreed with the TC that it should be illegal, by stating why I believe the way I do.

I'm pretty sure it's not illegal to cheat on your spouse in the U.S. at least not in California.

It should be illegal and you should have the right to divorce without giving up half of your things. Maybe something like that but really it should be illegal, agree?

As a christian I'd say yes, as a libertarian I'd say no. Inevitably I don't answer for the sins of others, so what they do in the end is their fault and theirs to explain to their maker and society. Making it illegal wouldn't change much, most people don't exactly have affairs in broad daylight, nor would it provide anymore justice, as you lose half your things when you are found out. The only real thing it would accomplish is getting the government involved in yet another personal affair of people, which both the christian and the libertarian side of me exclaims is not a good thing.

I was not cheated on, but I just see people getting cheated on in movies, at school, everywhere and I think it's dispicable. I hope I never get cheated on, and I know I would never cheat on my girlfriend/wife.

Shades of 1984. That sounds a bit totalitarianist.

Even though I've been married 11 years and have never cheated I strongly disagree. There are enough laws, and what goes on between spouses should stay there, out of the judicial system.btaylor2404
Couldn't you make a prenuptial agreement that if one of you were to cheat, the other would owe a large amount of money? That certainly wouldn't stay out of the judicial system.

Well the military is a different animal. They have their own laws which I think should mostly be kept in check. I didn't mean to say take all laws off the books, sorry for the misunderstanding, just the general public.

Yes. And that would be fine by me as well, but if I had to sign a prenup, I don't think I'd want to be married to her in the first place, and I hope she wouldn't either.

No, not a misunderstanding, I was pointing out that the military goes by a different standard, driven by public perception.:)

As a whole, the military's actions are driven by public perception.

For example (barring any disclosure of secrets), the military tries to keep the public informed that they are getting their money's worth on what they buy (which is why you see films of "bunker-busters" hitting their targets).

The military will bust members that don't pay their just debts, again due mostly to public perception (don't want the negative publicity).

Any military member desiring to take leave (vacation) in a Communist country has to obtain special permission to do so.

Military members are required to disclose any personal contacts from a person who may be a known Communist.

All of this comes from public perception.

[QUOTE="mattbbpl"]Should we then make it illegal to commit the unhealthy (in terms of relationships) practices that experts tell us typically lead to cheating?DigitalExile

No. Cheating means you don't want to be in a relationship. If you don't want to be in one end it. Cheating is like breaking a contract.

Cheating does not always mean that.

Why get married in the first place?
