I was born and raised in the tri state area and have always heard rumors about mob controlled areas. It seems like the Albanians and Russians have a lot more of a presence around here. Do the 5 families have any power anymore?

I could be wrong, but I think that nowadays, at least around here (NY) the mafia isn't what it used to be. Much less organized and nowadays made up of petty thugs/criminals who want to emulate what they see on shows like TheSopranos.
I don't know about America,but they're still present in Italy.Italian mob ofc.
Most of my family lives there and I hear from them that the mafia is still functioning there.Lto_thaG
Yeah it seems like the cops have really cracked down hard here. Someone who goes to my gym is supposedly a 'made guy' in a crew from NYC. But who knows.
Well since there is no more prohibition (which is what made them so powerful back in the day) they obviously wouldn't be as powerful as they used to be when alchohol was outlawed.
Hatiko
It's not a question of how powerful they are now as opposed to how powerful they were in thedays of prohibition!I was just wondering if they really had any power left at all.

Oh, whoops!
Well, the Italian in me wants me to scold you for even suggesting that there is an Italian mafia :P
But if there were to be such a thing...they still have power and influence, but not nearly as much as they used to. The FBI really started to crack down on the mafia in the latter part of the 20th century

Haha well we share an Italian background. When I went away for college there weren't really any Italians where I went. Because I have an Italian last name people there would always ask me about the mafia. I thought it was funny. But yeah it seems law enforcement has really crippled them.
[QUOTE="XilePrincess"]I'm not even full Italian and I live in Canada and people ask me if I'm related to any mob bosses.TheokhothWell, are you? :P That depends if you ever irk me or not :) Sleep with one eye open, just in case.
I'm not even full Italian and I live in Canada and people ask me if I'm related to any mob bosses. I'd say if anything, gangs control stuff more than mobs or mafias do, seeing as, y'know, they can't really just off people anymore without getting caught...XilePrincess
I would say mafias control more than gangs. Gangs like Latin Kings, Bloods, 13th St. seem to be big into selling drugs. Mafia organizations like Russian Mafia and Mexican Mafia seem to distribute those drugs to smaller gangs and also are more into extortion, rackateering, money laundering, gambling, and having 'legitimate' busineeses to cover up criminal enterprises.

Bingo! I used to work for a butcher-shop in Chicago, and it was OBVIOUSLY not worth being open. My boss was an Italian fellow. He met with other Italian fellows that drove relatively expensive cars. He came by the shop twice a day, and never paid much attention to the sales or products. He used to add a few hundred dollars each day to the Z when we tallied the cash register. It wasn't the only little shop he owned. But I gotta hand it to him, his whole-seller had some darn good meat. I'd still be working there if I didn't go to Medical School... good steak is hard the come by.The Mafia has been around since the 1400's, maybe even earlier. Hell, in those times they even had a few Popes and ran countries.Well, the Italian in me wants me to scold you for even suggesting that there is an Italian mafia :P

Did he wear athletic jump suits? Maybe it's just me, but I see always see Russian, Albanian, Italian guys in adidas athletic jump suits! It's like a stereotypical gangster thing that is actually true. And Russians seem to love Mercedes-Benz while Italians like their Cadillacs. Maybe it's just an NYC/North Jersey thing.

You're right, it started in Sicily in mid 1800's

Well I guess it depends strictly on what "the Mafia" is... but I'd call the Medici's a Mafia family.[QUOTE="mello7283"]

Well I guess it depends strictly on what "the Mafia" is... but I'd call the Medici's a Mafia family. Strictly speaking, "the Mafia" is a criminal organization based in Sicily, that later spread to America via italian immigration. The Medici family was a very powerful banking and political family based in Florence. The two are completely unrelated.
Up here in Boston we have organized crime, unfortunately. Though we have been popularized for Irish mafia, there is a large Italian presence in the North End of Boston. Just arrested a guy called the Big Cheese a year ago or so for racketeering... I don't think its as violent as it used to be however...

Hey thanks for posting that. My last name is Colombo, I had no idea they were a major crime family!
Yeah, I guess they are scum bags... but it's still interesting. My great grandpa was a lawyer for the mob in New Orleans. It's interesting to learn about it because it's so close to home. My mom used to always go to Nunzio Provenzano's house with her grandpa (the lawyer). I guess they were close because she knew them as Uncle Nunzi and aunt Josie. Carlos Marcello's house was right down the street. She knew Carlos as well. My dad also dated Marcello's grandaughter, I think, so he's familiar with him, as well.[QUOTE="mello7283"]
It sucks such a proud Italian name is stigmatized by some scum bags

So I like learning about all of that stuff since it's a part of history, and my parents were very familiar with it.
I agree that it's very interesting to learn about. I have a huge family, I wouldn't be surprised if i was related to some connected people.
