"A giant asteroid smashing into Earth is the only plausible explanation for the extinction of the dinosaurs, a global scientific team said on Thursday, hoping to settle a row that has divided experts for decades."

Hmm. Not sure "discover" is the right choice of words. More "confirm". The asteroid thing has been the most popular theory for the duration of my lifetime. Still pretty cool. Maybe, god forbid, the nations of the world will eventually start seriously investing in space programs.

Yeah, I had to mess around with my original title because I had an HTML error. I eventually fixed that and just forgot about the title, but I changed it.

Yes I can see how they would come to that conclusion, seeing as the reaper's destroyed all evidence of dinosaur civilisation and advanced technological and cultural society.

Unfortunately, it is still an "opinion." Even if you get a ton of people to share the same opinion, there is still the problem of evidence to support the opinion. We probably will never know what caused the KT extinction.

I will not sit idly by while some rock from space steals all my credit. I am writing angry letters to each and every one of those so-called scientists.

If someone travelled back in time and filmed an asteroid hitting the earth, their would still be some scientist disputing it

it makes sense...asteroid hits earth, earth freezes from lack of sunlight due to ashes in the atmosphere...then she unthaws.

ive recently herd a theory that humans and all life for that matter is passed back and forth through the solar system via sperm and egg senario. life can exist in dormant modes on other terrestrial planets due to its ability to harden, and re-animate once given proper conditions of water and atmosphere. in short terms life originally could have existed on mars or mercury, but an asteroid (the sperm) collides with mars and sends life material (hardened cells) into other planets (earth being the only "fertile egg" with water/atmosphere) creating life where possible. from a distance the comet hitting earth resembles sperm and egg transfusion further proving that life is a microcosm of itself. a theory but a solid one.

the craziest thing is the ammount of religious comments slamming the article. religious people are quite arrogant as a whole. their argument is that we dont know what happend that long ago, but it was god...so they know but no one else does. very hypocritical.

A major asteroid impact was always one of the more likely theories for such a sudden extinction of so many species. This has always been the most popular theory, but it's always good to have people challenge theories; possibly because it can be discovered that the theory is false, but also that debate can drive people to find more solid evidence. And a theory which fights back multiple challenges is a very strong one.

thats the thing about science its not exact and we admit that...but science is basically the process of whittling down the possiblites until as few explanations are left as possible. and we worked this one quite a bit.

if life can exist at the bottom of the ocean with no light and trapped in a volcanic crevace then it can survive a little asteroid impact. the more inportant question is weather or not life can be completly exterminated in any way once it begins. my theory is that life once awakened cannot be completly exterminated in any way. there will always be a small form of bacteria that can harden and reanimate once in the right conditionsand then evolve corrisponding to its enviroment.

Just so everyone knows, the definition of "Official" has been changed, and it now means "people having great confidence in." Not once was it officially confirmed, just "agreed upon."

While I agree with the theory it is still not a fact.

Dinasaurs are part of Earth's history. Can't be a bad thing knowing about them. What makes you say we focus too much on them. Only properly trained individuals are the ones focusing on them anyway and not all of us who just enjoy speculating.

Unfortunately, it is still an "opinion." Even if you get a ton of people to share the same opinion, there is still the problem of evidence to support the opinion. We probably will never know what caused the KT extinction.

foxhound_fox

You know it's based in part on the giant crater that can be dated to approximately the same period of time and physics-based models of what kind of effects that sort of impact would have, right? I'm not saying that is 100% definitely why they went extinct when they did, but when you say that "there is still the problem of evidence" it sounds like you're asserting that it is nothing but wild speculation.

Wild speculation is for archaeologists, not biologists and geologists. :P

The eating of dinosaur meat is not allowed in Orthodox Judaism. I'm not aware of any rules against it in other religions.
