As suggested on the topic, my dad bought Avatar on Blu-ray the day it came out. I've already seen it in theatres, and it's a great movie. The picture is amazing on a HDTV. Only one problem, and I'm pretty sure you've had it too. Usually, DVDs and Blu-ray come with bonuses like Special Features that give some terrific insight into how the film is made and deleted scenes that never made it to theatre due to time constraints.

Guess what? Apart from having a Blu-ray and DVD, Avatar is stripped of any special features other than audio selection and subtitles. What do you guys feel about this? Outrage is what I say I feel about it. How about you guys?

Especially with Blu-Ray, there's no excuse for not having SOMETHING, especially considering this isn't one of those HD remasters of a movie that came out in the 70s.

Yeah, Fox already announced several months ago that they would be releasing three different versions of the Avatar blu-ray throughout 2010. The first version is just the movie and nothing else. The second version (to be released in summer IIRC) will have some special features. The final version (IIRC to be released in winter) will have all the special features along with the option to watch it in 3D if you have a 3D TV.

They're milking this thing for all it's worth and are basically betting that most people either won't be patient enough to wait for the final version or will be unaware that the first two versions are incomplete and ripoffs.

Especially with Blu-Ray, there's no excuse for not having SOMETHING, especially considering this isn't one of those HD remasters of a movie that came out in the 70s.jalexbrown

Even those HD remasters usually have bonus features.

Admitingly, I should have done my research beforehand, but my parents haven't seen the movie yet, and they wanted to see how the movie looks in 1080p HD. I just hope people notice it and just have the patience to wait for Avatar to be released with all the special features. At least I have films like Pixar's Up to keep me happy.

Shoulda done your research before buying the movie. If you want the version with all the bonus features, you're gonna have to wait for that version to come out later this year.

I aways forget what IIRC stands for. Anyway , the movie is not really worth a buy to me regardless of the special features . Though I can definitely see why people would consider it a worthy buy. I do find it annoying that they are releasing diffrent versions.

This was clarified before it was released for home usage. I rented it today knowing this having not yet seen it in theaters and thought it was a great flick. Remember a lot of stories are redone, same goes for music and any other form of art... its just how you execute it.

Avatar was byfar the craziest form of HD that I've seen and it was on my TV!! I will buy it when the full version is released because like many I want to see what it took to make this film visually possible. (a lot of green screen but the tech is what im after)

Being Native American this film pumped me up

*shrugs*

I mostly never care about that **** anyway.

I'm buying the movie, not an opportunity to hear about how people brought to life a Piece Of ****.

Might be different if I were an aspiring filmmaker, but I'm not. I'm buying the movie, and the movie should stand alone. If it needs commentary and extra features in order to be worth buying, then it's not worth buying.

I don't know, sometimes there's good stuff in there. I don't think it ruins anything personally, it's not like some kind of magical wonderland ends up being a junkjard. Why do you care so much what people care about?

I was just giving my opinion it kinda ruins it A BIT, the junkyard statement has nothing to do with what I said, thats your conjecture. I feel that unless youre an aspiring film maker, the making and "special" are things you can let slide.

I agree that there's some boring stuff in there but there's certainly a lot of interesting stuff. This holds true in behind the scenes from video games.

What ruined the immersion during a movie is me saying "Mr Anderson..." (the matrix) when Elrond appeared in LOTR

Incorrect. Avatar uses up almost the entire disk. 46/50gb to be exact. For those complaining about it being barebones, I don't see why, because Fox has been pretty upfront about their release plans for Avatar. Heck, if you even bother to look on the back of the case before you purchase it, it tells you right there that all it includes is the movie as well. Pertaining directly to the Blu-ray though, it's by *far* the best looking movie in terms of picture and audio quality. It's absolutely phenomenal, reference-quality type definition.

For those who aren't sure if they'd enjoy Avatar in 2D as they did in 3D like I did, believe me, it's still amazing. The picture quality is impeccably sharp, the sound booms, and what it gives up with not having 3D, it makes up with significantly higher brightness and vividness of picture. Many of the scenes throughout the Blu-ray "pop" to a degree, actually giving many of the parts a very 3D-feel to it.

It's a great buy if you enjoyed the movie in theatres.

I think there was a code in there for online registration that says special features etc. But yeah its weird that there are no special features at all one the disc. I was pretty curious how they pulled off some of the effects.

Apart from this the blu ray is amazing though. Best visual quality you can get on blu ray at the moment i think. And its full frame 16:9 too

It's just a money grabbing exercise really. I don't usually watch much of the extra content, but the fact that its there makes the purchase seem more.. complete I guess. I generally don't buy movies without extra content, especially when it comes to Blu-Ray where you pay a premium anyway.

yes, but you'll also most likely get to watch interviews with the actors/director kissing each others asses, using words like "amazing" a lot.

To be fair, a lot of features about the making of Avatar were posted online.

I think that unless it's something special, like the two hours documentary they're preparing for the next release, extra features are a bit useless for a DVD. The Internet rendered them obsolete.

A little googling or a trip to Amazon would have been enough to dissuade anyone from buying this version. Pretty much everyone talking about it is complaining about how much of a blatant ripoff it is.

I'll be buying the 3 disc platinum collectors vintage supreme limited vista series blah blah blah version when it comes out in 6 months or so.
