I've never seen 1984's A Nightmare on Elm Street. Should I watch it? Is it...

Is it an iconic movie?

I'm not a fan of scary movies, movies with "boo!" elements, unwavering suspense (like in Poltergeist or something), or creepy/gore-y type stuff. However, I've been considering watching this specific movie.

This is because I always like seeing some popular/well known films as I end up moderately liking them, despite the genre. For example, I don't like science fiction at all and yet I watched both Star Wars Episode 4 and Episode 5, and I liked both. I wouldn't rewatch them but they were pretty nice for their genre.

Go ahead. It's a horror classic.

The scariness of the movie comes more from the helplessness of the victim. The entertaining part of the movie comes in the creative ways that Freddy carries out his crimes. I really like it, but it can also be pretty cheesy. The worst thing that could happen is that you wasted 90 minutes.

Watch the whole series... well... except the one without Robert Englund which should've never been made.

It's definitely worth viewing; the best ones personally, were the first three and New Nightmare.

No I'm just planning on watching the first movie. I admit I'm very interested in seeing a 1984 Johnny Depp :P

It's worth watching. The Freddy in the first one is vastly different from the one most people know today. He barely says a word. There are some pretty amazing practical effects that you would most likely never see today (evident from the remake trying to replicate some of the deaths with laughable results). I don't like it as much as most. The ending has way too many climaxes, and the last bit is way too cheesy. The idea is brilliant for the genre, but the execution is rather.. uneven. Still, it's worth a watch.

I'd say it's worth it. I don't think you'll be bored, at the very least.

GRR, you can't make me :x !

Heh, I'll think about it, if the opportunity presents itself. Right now I'm gonna give the first one a watch.

Actually... should I invite a friend or watch this movie alone? Hmm... wonder why I'm overthinking this, better not get cold feet.

Its worth watching, but the scariness factor is nearly completely gone.

The concept of the film is great but the film itself is very dated now with some visual effects looking painfully bad at times, the film really isn't scary at all. It's worth watching but don't expect too much from it.

It is not scary at all, especially by today's standards. It is also very B rate. However it is still a fun movie and it's interesting to see how Johnny Depp got started.
