Students in multiple other countries are smarter than American students. Our standards aren't terribly high here, and have been declining over the past few decades in my opinion.

Won't argue with this. It's kinda sad when you think about it too.

...I know a kid who was in highschool for 6 years...so is he smarter then me? You could go to school 24/7 for 365 days and still be the dumbest kid on earth...Im not saying they are or are not smarter, but just because they go to school longer doesnt mean anything.[QUOTE="SaintLeonidas"]
[QUOTE="LeGoofyGoober"]
pay attention. they're in school far longer then american students. someone who practices a martial art 7 days a week will be better at it then someone who practices it only 5.LeGoofyGoober
Not always when it comes to learning, people are different and may take them longer then others to fully learn and understand things. Someone could go to school for 3 months and learn calculus and it could take someone a whole year. Like I said I'm not saying they aren't smarter because based on other things Ive read many are, but simply saying they are just because they go to school longer doesn't mean anything.
Its just a known fact now, especially with all the stupid ass drop outs, failures, and gangs that we have in school. Not to mention the lack of care of many teachers, especially public schools,......So many people are stupid.they go to school 11 months out of the year, no christmas break, 6 days a week of school.

You can't immediately assume that they are smarter. Though Japanese culture can become obssessive with perfection, no wonder suicide rates are very high in Japan. Its their culture, We have our own. I personally couldn't tolerate that. I would feel like domestic livestock to work. **** that, im a rebel
LOL, they are too dumb to take the summer offthey go to school 11 months out of the year, no christmas break, 6 days a week of school.

They don't celebrate Christmas so that's a given, but they have other holidays such as Golden Week and the Emperor's Birthday etc. And they're technically at school 5-5.5 days a week, depending on the school. Some school have Wednesday off but all have half days on Saturday. Same system they have in France.they go to school 11 months out of the year, no christmas break, 6 days a week of school.

America has bacon sandwiches that use fried chicken instead of bread.

I think my cholesterol just shot through the roof by looking at it...
Why thank you, I just moved to Japan. But, no I didn't go there when I was still going to school because I'm 29 now.

Japanese students score higher than American students on international tests, so no, it's not trolling.
You can't equate test scores to intelligence.. Ever heard of Richard Feynman? What you're describing is a better work ethic.. which has nothing to do with how smart somebody is. Any human can train themselves to score high on tests. As long as they aren't mentally challenged. I went to college with a Japanese roommate.. he studied about 6-8 hours a day I studied about 30 minutes a week.. and I still scored the same as him on everything.they go to school 11 months out of the year, no christmas break, 6 days a week of school.

You can't equate test scores to intelligence.. Ever heard of Richard Feynman?A few rainmen don't beat an entire country's score.
Theyre also not as creative or as social.
My sister taught Japanese students for a few years, and it was frustrating. They would be doing something supposedly creative and yet when she said "OK, go ahead and see what you can do" they would look at her for instructions. Then she would demonstrate an example, and the students would copy it and try to produce as many copies of what she did as possible.
Also, just being to Japan and being around Japanese people, they seem like sheep, more so than the average American at least. They can execute things flawlessly, and I am sure they are extremely intelligent and certain aspects of their educational system are better than the US equivlent, but I dont think theye smarter.
Different is a better word for it.
And, of course, my generalization of Japanese students being sheep is as bad as your generalization was.

it doesnt. more knowledgeable, perhaps, but not smarter.
It also explains Japan's high suicide rate...I'd kill myself too if I had to go to school for over280 or sodays a year.

LMAO he is no rainman. He is a physicist. He is considered the latest genius but he does not even have a genius level IQ. You keep bringing up scores. Scores has nothing to do with overall intelligence.I should say he was.. Apologies

It's not exactly they don't have creative drive, we all have that in one aspect or another, but they've learnt to associate school with standardised tests where everything is either a right or wrong answer.

Ha! I teach in Japan, and let me tell you, they don't learn crap over here. Kids graduate without even attending school. I went to graduation in March and was shocked to see 2 kids I had never seen before in the ceremony. They receive no homework, receive absolutely no discipline, and never get held back due to grades or behavioral problems. Just because they go to school more than American students doesn't mean they are actually learning more.
And yeah, the students get a Christmas break. It's the teachers who don't. The kids get about 2 weeks off where I teach.
[QUOTE="-Chimera-"][QUOTE="Funky_Llama"]God this thread is awful :/Funky_LlamaBut is it the worst thread on the internet?Well, obviously. But then someone will make an even worse one tomorrow. So basically every awful thread is the worst thread, because they're progressively getting worse every time.

It seems that not many people remember that the U.S. once had the best educated work force/population in the world. Of course that is no longer the case, but then again, the U.S. isn't as nearly as potent as it used to be.
