wait...so how does that make them smarter?[QUOTE="SaintLeonidas"][QUOTE="LeGoofyGoober"]
they go to school 11 months out of the year, no christmas break, 6 days a week of school.
LeGoofyGoober
That's a false analogy.
Or wait its right: in both cases the quality of education (training) matters too.
Your logic is oversimplified.

Nooooooooo! My birthday's Christmas Day. It was almost a promise that I'd never work on my birthday. :(And yeah, the students get a Christmas break. It's the teachers who don't.

Ha! I teach in Japan, and let me tell you, they don't learn crap over here. Kids graduate without even attending school. I went to graduation in March and was shocked to see 2 kids I had never seen before in the ceremony. They receive no homework, receive absolutely no discipline, and never get held back due to grades or behavioral problems. Just because they go to school more than American students doesn't mean they are actually learning more.
And yeah, the students get a Christmas break. It's the teachers who don't. The kids get about 2 weeks off where I teach.
Ah, but the average I.Q is higher, no clue about the average test score.. You can't count your school as all of them though.
I'm not surprised. They push education over there, especially advanced math. I'm a college student who does light studying (around 40 minutes every day). After that, I tend to get braincramps and I need to do physical exercise to relieve the stress. I hear that Japanese university students spend hours every day studying. I have no idea how they're able to do it.

Well, they actually go to school on Christmas. Their break starts a couple days after that. You have to remember that these people aren't Christian for the most part, so Christmas means nothing to them other than exchanging presents. The New Year holiday is much more important to them.

Yes, but most schools in Japan are universally the same. They all follow the exact same curriculum. All my friends who taught over here have the same sentiments as me in regards to the education system in Japan. It's not as good as one might believe. I think it's terrible to be honest. Mainly because these kids receive no discipline. Apaprently every student has a right to learn, but they won't reprimand the students who make the classroom a playpen. Even though every child has a right to learn, they'll let the students goof off during class even if it prohibits others' education.
I think Japan has just made me a bitter person. The kids for the most part of great and intelligent, but I do wonder if they are actually learning or just doing what is necessary to receive good grades.
Theyre also not as creative or as social.
My sister taught Japanese students for a few years, and it was frustrating. They would be doing something supposedly creative and yet when she said "OK, go ahead and see what you can do" they would look at her for instructions. Then she would demonstrate an example, and the students would copy it and try to produce as many copies of what she did as possible.
Also, just being to Japan and being around Japanese people, they seem like sheep, more so than the average American at least. They can execute things flawlessly, and I am sure they are extremely intelligent and certain aspects of their educational system are better than the US equivlent, but I dont think theye smarter.
Different is a better word for it.
And, of course, my generalization of Japanese students being sheep is as bad as your generalization was.
Yeah, just look at the Japanese and their lack of creativity, it is not like Nintendo or Konami are amongst the most brilliant and creative games developers in the world. If taking test is what defined me as a person.... Then, I am a bad person. But, yet I am able to make better decisions than all my friends. Funny, they have better grades than me. I think public schools in general are a bad system, I think parents should teach their children. Not the government. Places are just so dreadful to be at. Seriously, if all of a sudden I had to go to public school for another year, I most definately would rather die than to do that again..... >_>

oh well... we are still eliter, and invented the Corvette lolNever3ndingLife
We are the......elitest? :P And the Corvette is a mighty car, but I think most will agree that the Japanese have made more contributions to the automotive world in the terms of technology, quality, reliability, and fuel efficiency.
And just because they study more doesn't make them inherently smarter than us :D

That or home schooling.
Home schooling can mean anything from an educated parent teaching a child one-on-one or in my case, teaching yourself with text books and have parents give you assignments.

Nowadays parents dont even have time to tend to the basic needs of their children let alone have the massive and time-consuming responsibility to care for their education on that level.Additionaly, the quality that can be achieved with education at school is much higher than at home. Moreover, school is the most important socialisation environment for children. So no, home tutoring has many draw backs.
Lastly, lets not allow our potential disagreement with what is allowed to be taught at school, lead us to make absurd claims; such as that parents should teach their children.
This screams out loud that some people want their children to not come in contact with some notions that school may in the future teach, such the acceptance of homosexuals or generally ideas that the parents dont agree with.
Japanese students probably are smarter than American students, but you can't just say it's because they go to school for longer periods of time...HereticGamer911Ditto.
With the TC's oversimplified logic we could as well conclude that they are less smart just because they need more time to absorb information.
Which is equally absurd to conclude.
I heard it is a lot harder, for them. Don't they take Exams to go to certain public schools. Also they kill themselves a lot.
well that explains why they are smarter. I sure would rather be dumber than them though. 11 month school year and 6 day week sure wont cut it for me. I also believe most of them use that day off to do other classes outside of school (I think I saw it in a video in school on Japanese culture).they go to school 11 months out of the year, no christmas break, 6 days a week of school.

I know you intended your reply as sarcasm, but Ill take it seriously since you proved my point.
First, let me say that I did not imply that the Japanese do not have the ability to be creative. if given the opportunity, they can provide art and entertainment as creative as any other culture.
With that said, the Japanes educational system does not provide that great of an environment to cultivate creativity. In fact, it is quite the opposite: the general Japanese school is used to create conformity.
So yes, while you can problably list off a number of genius Japanese developers, producers, and programmers of Japanese video games, that is not the norm.
Lets look at Cloud, note the long, light colored hair and it drooping over the eyes
Now lets look at this dude from Resident Evil. Again, note the long, light colored hair and how it comes over his eyes.
And, look, more light colored hair coming down over the eyes!
The point I am trying to make is that there seems to be a lot more imitation and copying in Japanese video games than in other nation's video games. Worst of all, if a character becomes so loved, they dont even make new ones: how many Final Fantasies are there? How many Metal Gears?
And, worst of all, there is a great lack of gameplay diversity among these games.

Quality > Quantity. I could sit and listen to the same horrible teacher for six days, or three days and in the end I will have learned the same thing in six days as I did in three....absolutely nothing.

I hope to God that was sarcasm. :|
not all smarts come from a class room. youre only a kid once. 11 months out of the year is for to long to be in school. a healthy out of school social life is far more important to human development than learning math.
ALSO you ever notice how when your sitting in class and your mind starts to zone out within the first 20 minutes if its not something really gripping? well just cause you spend more time in the class room doesnt mean youll be smarter. being worked like a machine only makes you become a machine.
that said. american public school is fail anyway. they could go to school half that time and theyd still probly be getting a better education. our college system isnt so bad though.

I'll just quote one of my other posts (he was showing gears of war, god of war, etc)
Anyways, I could say all American games are generic FPSes/RTS/Action games, but they aren't (generally).
:
[QUOTE="double_heist"]Since many people say the Japanese characters look the same and effeminite... So much of Western variation too. XDYandere
Don't forget:
Just because Japanese kids are in school longer doesn't mean anything. Are you aware that the Japanese educational system is set up so that it is impossible to fail a grade until you reach high school? You can't even get detention, much less expelled, until high school either. The Japanese educational system is, in actuality, quite optional for the students. It's not unheard of for some students to drop out of the school system after they graduate middle school (since education is only required up to 9th grade).
Yes, Japanese kids do very well on standardized tests but a lot of that has to do with the fact that the Japanese education is set up so that students are trained to do well on standardized tests in general. The rest of their academic success comes from their culture's emphasis on kids doing well in school.
Also, just because someone is in school more often doesn't mean they'll be smarter at all. While I never intentionally skipped school (that was pretty damn hard to do in a rural area like mine) I often paid so little attention in class that I may as well have not been there at all. I also never studied until my senior year of high school. Today I go to one of the US's best universities, hold a 3.84 GPA majoring in neuroscience, and am actively involved in scientific research (if all goes well I could have both a thesis and a published paper by this time next year, maybe even sooner). Meanwhile I know some kids were extremely studious in high school and have performed rather mediocrely in college. I don't mean to brag but rather to just point out that in most cases a smart person is going to be smart no matter what and a dumb person is going to be dumb no matter what.
Well they do go to school more than students in North America do and there is more emphasis on school life and here as well, but that doesnt mean that they are automatically smarter.
When I was in school in Japan, I knew of several students who were going to not go to high school once their junior high school was over with, but also many who were determined to get into the best.
Just because they go to school longer doesn't mean they're smarter, it just means they are perhaps more educated than some American students. It also depends on what type of high school they go to, if they go to one that focuses on them getting into Tokyo university, of course they are going to be more educated than the rest of the students in Japan, because they have the marks to get into those schools. Without a clear understanding on how the Japanese school system works, you can't just say they are smarter than American students, thats just silly.
