That's a different design and Japan already has those. This is clearly an aircraft carrier.

Their leader just gained control of their Parliament and one part of his platform is to push back against these restrictions.

What I don't get is why it has American style banners all over it.

its probably a flat top to be stylish and reminiscent of the ww2 pocket aircraft carriors like the soryu and hiriu. those who dont know either of those names probably remember the US naval battle at the solomon islands. those were actualy aircraft carriers those were destoryers that they had refitted with a runway strip. its probably also ment to confuse the enemy as up in the air it perhaps is ment to resemble one. meanwhile their real carrier is right next to it or w/e

i'm no expert on military vessels but i think it looks exactly like South Korea's helicopter carrier.

The Izumo does not have catapults for launching fighters, nor does it have a "ski-jump" ramp on its flight deck for fixed-wing aircraft launches.

Well then it's not an aircraft carrier.

That thing is far too small to carry fixed wing aircraft, especially for take off. Even so, I wish Japan WOULD build some aircraft carriers for personal defense. They will need it with China knocking on their doorstep.

They want us to believe that the destroyer isn't a carrier to mask the fact it's a robot.

i would prob want real aircraft carriers if i lived in their regional neighborhood, though

I think Japan should be able to rearm.

We're essentially paying to protect them.

Why do I get the feeling that at the press of a button that "not aircraft carrier" transforms into a giant robot that shoots katanas and mini-nukes. 

I don't blame them, Godzilla returns next summer. :P

Clearly says in the article that it's made to carry helicopters, and transport personnel and supplies incase of natural disasters.
It may not launch aircraft, but aircraft sure as hell can be put on it.

Theyre an island nation with finite resources, every reason to expand aggressively, and have done so in the past against hostile, neutral, and allied nations.
