Apparently this is not an aircraft carrier and cannot be used to launch aircraft.
Sure Japan... sure...

And we should care, why? Pirate700Because our treaty states that they are not allowed to make aircraft carriers. This is clearly them trying to circumvent that.
[QUOTE="jimkabrhel"]I believe Japan only is allowed to have military for defensive reasons... Some restrictions put in place, can't remember whySo which country are they preparing for? Any guesses?

Their leader just gained control of their Parliament and one part of his platform is to push back against these restrictions.
its probably a flat top to be stylish and reminiscent of the ww2 pocket aircraft carriors like the soryu and hiriu. those who dont know either of those names probably remember the US naval battle at the solomon islands. those were actualy aircraft carriers those were destoryers that they had refitted with a runway strip. its probably also ment to confuse the enemy as up in the air it perhaps is ment to resemble one. meanwhile their real carrier is right next to it or w/e

Isn't that just because they were such jerks during WWII? Honestly I don't see the point in imposing such restrictions on them now. That was like, 70 years ago. Having said that, the rules are the rules, I guess. If they're not supposed to make aircraft carriers, then they're not supposed to make aircraft carriers.
[QUOTE="osirisx3"]
maybe they use it for attack choppers?
Wasdie
That's a different design and Japan already has those. This is clearly an aircraft carrier.
i'm no expert on military vessels but i think it looks exactly like South Korea's helicopter carrier.
Those are semaphore banners, and it's an international standard. If it was a closer shot, you could likely read the name of the ship after you deciphered them. What I don't get is why it has American style banners all over it.
worlock77
The starboard aft corner has an aircraft elevator. This ship is definitely designed to launch some form of aircraft, even if the weather deck doesn't have a nonskid airstrip.

it's a Izumo-class helicopter destroyer. It's no big secret jeez.
The ship I was stationed on, the USS Nassau, had neither catatpult nor "ski jump" ramp, yet it was still capable of launching Harrier jets. The Izumo does not have catapults for launching fighters, nor does it have a "ski-jump" ramp on its flight deck for fixed-wing aircraft launches.
Well then it's not an aircraft carrier.

it's a Izumo-class helicopter destroyer. It's no big secret jeez.Storm_MarineIt's too big for a destroyer. "Cruiser" is kind of pushing it, too. If they just said "helicopter carrier" and didn't try to be cute...

I'm talking about the red, white and blue semi-circles around the railing.
My sources have confirmed that they plan to challenge U.S. naval superiority with a boat that seems fit to launch helos.
but srsly
are they allowed to launch helicopters?
if so, this isn't really much to be made news of
i would prob want real aircraft carriers if i lived in their regional neighborhood, though
"Though technically a destroyer, some experts believe the new Japanese ship could potentially be used in the future to launch fighter jets or other aircraft that have the ability to take off vertically."
Yeah, I kinda don't think they have planes in mind for this.

possibly, though you could easily argue you could store helcopters with folding rotors in there for maintainance and weather protection

coolbeans90
they've had 2 helicopter carriers for a while now. this is just newer and bigger.

so, this isn't really news then.
Clearly says in the article that it's made to carry helicopters, and transport personnel and supplies incase of natural disasters.
It may not launch aircraft, but aircraft sure as hell can be put on it.
If i was Japan i'd just break the treaty, I mean what will Obama really do about it.FrostyPhantasmTHey should, thats stupid they arent allowed to build them

Theyre an island nation with finite resources, every reason to expand aggressively, and have done so in the past against hostile, neutral, and allied nations.
The treaty is a good idea.
I support the militarization of Japan. The Japanese people should be allowed to defend themselves.Laihendi
They are allowed to do so, and that is not what is being questioned here.
