I like this one too. :DWhy do I get the feeling that at the press of a button that "not aircraft carrier" transforms into a giant robot that shoots katanas and mini-nukes.
I don't blame them, Godzilla returns next summer. :P

I would be pretty damn imrpessed if we finally got some mechas.Japan has bigger plans than launching planesAce6301

Yes. Though I didn't know he wasn't considered head of state.
Those are semaphore banners, and it's an international standard. If it was a closer shot, you could likely read the name of the ship after you deciphered them.[QUOTE="OrkHammer007"]
[QUOTE="worlock77"]
What I don't get is why it has American style banners all over it.
worlock77
I'm talking about the red, white and blue semi-circles around the railing.
Oh... aren't those generic festival banners? Either that, or they're surplus from the US Navy's Okinawan base. The more I look at that ship, the more I think it looks like an Iwo Jima-class LPH:

Which base would that be?

Just googled it, and yeah... we don't have a Navy base in Okinawa. I thought we did, but I was stationed on the East Coas, so I must have heard someone mention a port call there and thought it was our port. There is a communications station there as well as a naval hospital that I had to go to when I had broken my wrist for xrays to ensure it was all healed, but as far as a full blown Navy base or port, yeah, there is not one. The Okinawans want to close the base I was stationed at down.
It's pretty clear that the US is turning a blind eye to this. Japan has China right on their doorstep and China has been working hard to build a navy with real force projection. It's only natural that Japan wants to have some big guns of their own. The US can't protect Japan anymore. The military budget is getting stalled and a bunch of our aircraft carriers are going to be decommissioned soon.
From what I can tell this is just Japan arming itself just in case. The ship is only 30-50 meters shorter than most other major aircraft carriers in this world. If they wanted they could outfit the thing with proper catapults to launch F-18s and other fighters.
From what I can tell Japan and China have already entered a small cold war as each is going after control of southeast Asia.
My opinion? Let them. The US and Japan have been best buddies for a long time and the Japanese people have changed quite a bit. The treaties made after WWII are useless today. Japan should be able to arm themselves against China.

This is an aircraft carrier. All the news stories are disinformation campaigns to make round eyes wonder what those crazy asians have done. Now the question as to who is going to get to feel the wrath of this thing is interesting. I'm betting it'll be China/North Korea.TruthTellers
The odds are no one will feel the wrath, but several will likely feel the preasure; namely China.
Right now China & Japan are having a pissing contest over who dominates the asian region. Add to this a very bitter histry and tension is high.
NK won't likely even feel the preasure. Japan would let the US take over most of that, and not risk harming one of their top tier ships when an ally with much more to spare can take the burden.

The Peace-Prize-toting warmonger would use it as a pretext to accelerate his Asia Pivot.
Boom. I guess we'll see.
