Jay-Z feat. Alicia Keys - Empire State of Mind

Popular song, right? Listen at 3:05, what does he say?

Here is a video of someone tackling the issue head-on. There are two parts, here's the second.

I ask that you please watch both videos before making a statement, thanks.

I'd like opinions on this, I'll share mine as well: I agree with what the Pastor in the video said. I'm a Christian, and will defend Christ over Jay-Z. I might get shot down for this, but what're my choices? Hide, to avoid the shunning of GameSpot? Or rep Christ...?

A huge deal was made about the inadequatelycontroversial Kanye West incident. But this, this is nothing, apparently. This has gotten zero mainstream attention from what I could tell, and is far more important than the K. West deal.

It hasn't gotten any mainstream attention because it's not interesting in the slightest. So what if a rapper doesn't think Jesus can save you.

I am sorry but the only controversy I see is that compared to other Jay-Z songs that one is garbage. But as for the point, I am sure that what he said at 3:05 will make a lot of people mad.Although this will not be the first time song lyrics had come under fire.

I watched your videos... although I do see the man's point that Jay stepped on a belief system, I DO think that it was taken out of context and blown way out of proportion. Think about how many times the "n" word is used in that song....is Al Sharpton going to bash Jay for saying it? Nope. And I'll bet you any money that Jay-Z believes in Christ.

This guy also connects Jay-Z to the Free Masons and associates them with devil worship, so this guy thinks Jay-Z is a warlock.

Something about Jesus not being our savior or something. Nothing that really fits under the catagory of important thanks to the fact that Song lyrics, especially rap ones have always been controversial at times. Remember the 90's.

Seriously? i always seem to get annoyed by religious nuts who get so offended over something trivial such as lyrics. To put it bluntly, if you dont like the lyrics of a song, then do everyone else a favor and dont listen to it.

He wants attention just like all the other artists. What better way than take a stab at Christianity? Either way I never liked his music or him so I don't care.

It's just a touchy subject because Jesus is considered the savior in the predominant religion in America (and a lot of other places).

But just like you said, there's a lot worse. It's not like he talks about doing a **** ton of drugs and killing his baby's mother.

Oh snap. Will JC respond to the diss? Will JC make a diss record back? This beef will be legendary.

Where as the latter is definitely disturbing and has gone for too long, Jay-Z touches on a subject, that if analysed by Christians and by anyone, is completely obliterated by science. Lose - lose situation.

He's defending his conviction, values, and morals for the sole reason that they were

disrespected with undivided impiety. And I don't fault him for it. It's something most

people would do if someone said or did something to a certain aspect of their life that

is momentous to them. Meh, good stuff. I don't listen to Jay-Z btw. *bites pop-tart*

Trent Reznor once said "God is dead and no one cares. If there is a hell, I'll see you there."

And John Lennon once said "Imagine there's no Heaven, it's easy if you try. No Hell below us, above us only sky."

This all sounds like a whole bunch of nothing. Oh no Jay-Z said that Jesus isn't my savior?! Whatever am I to do?!

*faints*

Yeah, great. At worst, Jay-Z isn't a christian. This is important because...?

Freedom of speech.... If something offends you in somebodies lyrics, do yourself and ourselves a favor and don't listen to it. Besides, rap has never been about appeasing Christians or any other religious group. Of course there are rappers that rap about their faith, and there are rappers that rap about their lack of faith as well.

Wait...Wait! So, its a big deal that Jay-Z may or may not worship God and/or Jesus Christ? Speaking as a Christian, this is something too stupid and trivial to concern themselves with. I mean, seriously, who gives a damn?

I lost interest of the song, after finding out that it was sampling "Love On a Two Way Street", a classic R&B late 1960 ballad. I frown on these "artists" who has to take other songs to make their own rendition of it.

Well I've listened to the song hundreds of times and I didn't realise he was saying that, maybe that's why nobody is making a big deal about it also they mightn't be making a big deal about it because it's not a big deal

Also "Jay-Z's nickname Hova is short for J-Hova which is a play on the word "Jehovah", which is Hebrew for God."
