http://www.boston.com/business/articles/2012/06/12/more_than_seven_in_10_us_teens_jobless_in_summer/

Once a rite of passage to adulthood, summer jobs for teens are disappearing.

Fewer than three in 10 American teenagers now hold jobs such as running cash registers, mowing lawns or busing restaurant tables from June to August. The decline has been particularly sharp since 2000, with employment for 16-to-19-year olds falling to the lowest level since World War II.

Older workers, immigrants and debt-laden college graduates are taking away lower-skill work as they struggle to find their own jobs in the weak economy.

Thoughts?

I just got my little brother a job at where I work, and he just turned 16. It's an easy job that pays $11 an hour, yet he's not all that thankful :P. On another note, I gave a poor recommendation regarding someone I knew who was applying at my work and she didn't get hired. :)

I'm one of those high school graduates working these jobs right now. But, at least when they get their degrees, they'll be able to work the jobs we work now.

Overall, more than 44 percent of teens who want summer jobs don't get them or work fewer hours than they prefer.

This is the more relevant number.

Why would teenagers want to waste their last few valuable summers where they get to do nothing? Seems ok to me.

How about go take those jobs from Mexicans cutting people grass.. If I only had time to work in summer has a teen. I would quit my job in heart beat... When I was a kid I had 17 yards I would cut every week. Each one I could do in 45 mins to hr tops. Times that by 30-40 bucks a pop. Beats any job. It's to bad I require a job that has sturdy pay all year long

speaking of Mexicans. i was actually watching a documentary last night about businesses in the south hiring illegal Mexicans. owners was coming out showing all this proof how they was spending thousands of dollars on ads of help wanted. all the applications. for exsample. for the apple picking company. Dude spent over $2000 in ads, over 200 put in applications, ONLY 67 picked a time for a interviews, only 3 showed up. 1 didn't even show up to work once hired...

Well, I'm in that age range and jobless atm. Haven't really tried to get a job though. I have a few connections, so I might be able to get one if I have to.

Only things I'm really interested in getting a job for are gas for my car, and earning money to put into more investments so I can generate more wealth.

Prolly because most of the jobs that teens would do like working in a fast food restaurant are now taken by immigrants, to be specific from mexico and south america.

If teens cultivate too much money in their name though it can actually become a problem when it comes to college financial aid. Since all financial aid is based on "demonstrated need" and 10k of available money in the kids name counts many times more than say 10k of free income in the parents name.

The job market can't support them, not enough to go around. And since they have little to no experience, they are less likely to be hired. At best they can hopefully get some starter jobs like fast food or something, but we all know that doesn't pay the bills.

College is also an issue in it'self, a lot of them will rush off to it and end up in massive debt and with no way to pay it because their degree is worthless. I'm afraid I might end up in this group.

Getting a job is the easiest thing you could do, you just have to look man and teenagers are waaay tooo lazy to look. ive had a summer job reserved for me for about 3 months now. why??? because i looked all over the place until i found a daycare center which agreed to wait for me to finish school before i could start working. where i live at i hear about teenagers getting jobs everyday. theres countless job openings and not to mention you also have to have connections. so i dont think its that bad

My thought is that liberals increase the minimum wage so much that businesses can't afford more employees. They have to raise prices, cut employees, and find other ways to cut costs. Not to mention the huge increase in the cost of electricity, among other things. The place i work uses HALF the power we did 9 years, ago yet our electrical costs are DOUBLE. We can thank government regulation for that.

There's plenty of work out in the fields this summer.
