i have no idea why he was so popular, maybe movie watchers wanted to watch somebody who couldnt act but could shoot somebody. I think Clint Eastwood is a much better actor and he makes better westerns. The good the bad and the ugly is better than any movie John wayne has ever been in. What do you guys think? Do I not get John wayne?

So what? John Lennon wasn't a great singer, technically.

John Wayne fits the western image perfectly, he fills roles different to Eastwood. Respectively, they're both icons for the genre

I think clint fitted the image better, and he was around while john wayne was still around. Who do you prefer?

i agree with this. wayne usually fit the characters he was playing pretty well. having said that, i must admit that i don't like any of his movies. they are mostly nationalist propoganda. he was also straight up racist.

The movies he starred in didn't require a good actor, just a hardened looking dude- which he was.

I like Eastwoods movies better but as a man few actors have as much character or backbone. He was a brutaly honest patriot, a rare find especially in hollywood. Only a unintelligent driveling coward brainwashed by the real propoganda would call him racist, You use the term nationalist like it only applies to whites, he was not a white nationalist, he was in seriously involved with mexicans and other minorites. He stood true to his beliefs was a great man in time when men were men.

I actually don't care that he was racist. You have to remember that this was before the civil rights movement, and half the nation was already racist. He wasn't an evil person, just uninformed.
