[QUOTE="Jandurin"] a youthful group of adventurers explore the universe with lazors and aliens!xxDustmanxx

It just looks like The OC: Star Trek. Not my cup of tea.

Why don't you try watching it first?

Because I don't want to spend money on something I don't think I'd like.

It's not that at all. I hated The OC -- I wouldn't use that analogy on it.

It is the excessively young hot cast that gives me that impression. I'm all for some young hot folk but it seems they're selling something else there and toss the Star Trek label on to bring in another demographic or group of fans for more money.

That, and that it's so obviously directed at non-fans.

Would it be better if Kirk looked like he got beat with an ugly stick since childhood, and then magically grew up to look like William Shatner after years of abuse?

Taking Chris Pine out of the equation (who I wouldn't call hot -- and had some scenes that you wouldn't call hot and spent most of the movie beat up, battered, bloodied, and bruised) -- ,most of the cast are relatively unknown or wouldn't be called HOT. Zachery Quinto -- sure, if you're into his Spock look. John Cho? Lol. Eric Bana is practically unrecognizable. Simon Pegg? Hmm... nah. Okay ... wait... who's supposed to be hot in this movie?

Yeah, it certainly has some of the non-fan's attention. One of my friends wants to see it because he said that it looked like a good action movie, and not a sci-fi movie.

As I said earlier... the movie is made for the non-fans. It is JJ's Star Trek. Not to say that the fans will not get something out of it. As they most definitely would. JJ did make sure to give each character good screen time, great lines, a lot of recognizable innuendos from the other series... so on and so forth. But when you do see it and realize how JJ cheated on the thing -- you can accept it and move on along with JJ -- or start fantastic debates on the internet about the whole thing. Its quite exciting. :) I need someone else who's seen it so I can expound on this whole thing more

I'm pretty sure that Duxup will end up watching it anyway. He sounds like a butt-hurt old school star trek fan. Get with the program man, they are just trying to make the series a bit more appealing. I think they have taken it in the right direction, and everyone else seems to agree as well as long time star trek fans.

One of the main reasons Im even going to see it is because it is J.J. Abrams Star Trek and not the Star Trek of the past.SaintLeonidas
agreed. Abrams has a kind of a mysterious aspect in his movies. his movies/shows tend to ask more questions than answer them. like Lost for example. what made that show so intriguing in the earlier seasons was the mystery. now the show is crap imo. i still have yet to see the last few episodes though. anyways, i can't wait until i see this movie. i might see it with my mom for mothers day.

While I'm not as lucky as Saje in seeing it this early I will be able to see it with the rest of the Bay Area film critic group tomorrow night. I'll enjoy this film to a degree even if it does turn out to be less than what the trailers are promising. I've been a fan of the franchise right from the original series even up to the end of Enterprise. From others I know who have seen it already through early screenings I'd say Saje's thoughts on the film is dead to rights. It's a way to reboot the franchise without alienating the huge base of fans (except for the zealous, almost jihadist inner-inner hardcore who thought the franchise stopped being quality after TNG) but at the same time bringing in new fans who always thought the franchise was a nerdfest with technobabble only the Trekkers squeed at.

So what if Abrams and Paramount wants new fans to check out the franchise. I don't really see that as a bad thing since if it succeeds then the franchise continues to live beyond the conventions and TV reruns. Some here have already proclaimed the film to be garbage without seeing it and that has less to do with how good the film is since they've never seen it and more their personal feeling to what they think is something being done to their baby. I say to these people. The people who own Star Trek would be glad to lose some of you if it means gaining ten new fans for each.

I.m not huge Abrams fan and think he's done better as a writer than as a director. If there's something he's good at it would be knowing what sells and find a way to do it good enough that it's not pandering to the audience but also not trying to be the critics darling.

Cool, may see it this Friday - or Terminator. Like the fact it targets the non-Star-Trek crowd aswell as the fanbase, and I loved the trailer; the effects look amazing.

Exactly! Exactly Exactly! JJ is a marketing genius and knows his target audience. I want to hate him but admire him for it. The 4 of us here at work are pissing people off for discussing it -- but man does it open up a lot of discussions. Great ones... which easily incorporates old fans with the new fans this feature will bring about. I am sure the new fans would be inclined to want to learn about the OG franchise as well. And yes Simon Pegg is definitely in the movie. And he is friggin awesome in it.

[QUOTE="Sajedene"] Actually that is a spoiler. So good job. Sajedene

The third trailer already gave this away, around 1:40

All the trailer showed was the Romulan attack. Anyone aware that Eric Bana was in the movie would know that. It makes no mention of any alternate reality scenario.

Nero says "James T. Kirk was a great man... but that was in another life". It's quite obvious what this means.

Leonard Nimoy makes some very valid points about why hardcore trekkies shouldn't write off the movie without seeing it.

I'm seeing it Thursday at 8pm, it's the first screening in my country. Can't wait!

He cheated? He didn't cheat he murdered it literally. It doesn't fit into continuty, hell what he did wasn't even Star Trek. He only left one series intact when he was finished and that one isn't even considered Trek by a lot of fans anyway. All he did was turn this into an above average action film. Congrats JJ you got your new fans you just lost the old ones in the process.

Have you read Nimoy's interview?

The original series always had a lot of adventure, and so do the books (yes, I know most of them are non-canon). Paste from imdb: Episodes normally unravelled like this - Enterprise invesigates some sort of abnomily or distress call - Enterprise under threat - - Kirk in peril - Kirk has a fight then a snog (sometimes with the same person)- Kirks quick mind saves the day - Kirk returns the bridge and sits in his captains chair makes a profound observation about the day - Spock raises one eye-brow. Kirk and the lads all have a chuckle on the bridge.

Thanks, Saje. I haven't been so excited since the last Star Wars:lol:

Oh yes it totally does fit into continuity ... kinda sorta yes and no. A lot of Trek fans should appreciate how ensemble the whole thing is if anything. I can't discuss further without spoiling anything. But I think one has to see it to make full judgment. Do I love it? No. I like it for what it is... but I don't hate it either. Its a great watch.

How does it fit into continuity? They can't even pull a Year of hell ending with what he did.

I will tell you (and spoil it for you) how it fits into continuity if you can tell me -- What did he do?

I was surprised by how important Nemoy's opinion on the movie is. If he didn't like the script and turned down his reprise, Abrams was set to rewrite the entire thing.

For one particular scene -- I kinda wish he did . But eh... its my BTTF upbringing that makes me say that -- others would probably love it. He is the reason for JJ's cheat.

A bunch of things were destroyed... or is that a metaphor for something.

Movie looks interesting, and I loved JJ Abraham's Cloverfield.. Though I would not consider my self a Star trek fan, I did enjoy the majority of the Startrek movie (though I cared little for any of its series that spawned from them). How does it compare to First Contact? I thought that one had to be one of the best of all the movies.

[QUOTE="Jandurin"] That, and that it's so obviously directed at non-fans.Sajedene

Yeah, I think it was pretty obvious that this movie was being made for a new audience. I could tell not just from the commercials, but also from what has been said about the movie's purpose by the director or someone like that. I think they have succeeded in their mission because I never expected some of my friends to be interested.

I have a few reasons to go see it, some of my friends want to go, I'm curious to see how they make the appeal to a wider audience, and the visual effects look awesome. I'm glad to hear that there will be some easter eggs for fans of the shows to find--that's just icing on the cake. I think I'll be able to enjoy it, even if it doesn't represent Star Trek word for word, and all of that.
