A 17 year old teenager was driving a car 70 miles per hour down a 35 and crashed. The two passengers in the back (not wearing seatbelts) are dead. The state is sending him to jail for 13 years.

Thoughts?

I have no source, this was on the radio when I was driving home.

Sounds about right. Since he was the driver and crashed, wouldn't that be considered murder? I'm not an expert at the law so I don't know.

They considered it Aggravated something assault. They just put the phrase "driving way too ****ing fast" and put it in three big words.

From what you saidI see no problem with that. He was driving, he is responsible for the his actions, and because of that two people are dead, he must pay the price.

So let me see, he was driving way over the limit and his passengers weren't wearing seatbelts. Yeah he deserves to go to jail. But how long the sentence should be, I can't decide if 13 years is too much.

The issue I have with this is why did the state allow this kid to get his licence? What were the parents thinking letting this kid get behind the wheel? Now he's going to jail for 13 years. He's going to spend almost as much time in jail as he has lived. Don't you think the state should have better traffic schools? Don't you think they should push back the driving age? This is just one of the many many many accidents that happens in the US.

There's a difference between teaching someone how to drive and them actually driving with common sense. Sure, the DMV can say, "Don't drive 70 in a 35, and don't drive with two passengers unbuckled while you're only 17," but is the kid actually going to listen? You can push back the driving age all you want, but it's not going to stop stubborn people from driving the way they shouldn't. Anyway, I'm glad the kid got the time he deserved, but it's a shame it's not going to affect many other younger drivers. "It'll never happen to me" is how it always ends up happening. :(

I was expecting, like, a child (even though that would make no snese), not a 17 year-old. It seems like he should pay the price for his actions though.

Well if you can't do the time don't do the crime. I think it's only fair that he goes for that amount of time since he's killed 2 people and could have killed a lot more.

13 is too short. And it is no one else's fault but his. Don't blame parents, schools, or the government.

We have a recent case similar to this here. This happened a few years ago, but a teen was driving with 4 passengers, they were all drunk(not saying the kid you're talking about was drunk or not) and were speeding and crashed into a pole. Two died, and the driver and another passenger were in critical condition. They have since recovered, but the driver is now serving his jail sentence of 10 years, which seems a bit stingy in my eyes.

His first mistake was letting his passengers not wear their seatbelts. His second mistake was driving at 70 MPH in a 35 MPH zone. If he was thinking, he would have at least said, "Hey guys, put your seatbelt on. I'm not going to be risking your lives." If he was also thinking, he would have seen that he was going too fast and would have slowed down, telling himself he as going way too fast. However, since common sense wasn't present, he made a foolish decision and ended up taking two lives. Because it was his actions and stupidity, he crashed and took the lives of two other people, leading it to him going to jail for it. His fault, he deserves it. Next time, maybe he won't make the same mistake twice.

If he was going, say, 45 MPH in a 35, I'd feel sorry for the kid. But 70 in a 35? He should go to prison just for being an idiot.

The worst part is that he's gonna be really f'ed up. He's still in his developmental years and he has to live with the fact that it was basically his fault that his friends are dead. Also considering all the people out of his family probably doesn't want anything to do with him.

He also is stuck with only getting a GED and he probably won't get any farther than community college, seeing as how he's never gonna get any student loans or scholarships.

Well, first the two dead should have wore seatbelts, and second of all why would you go 70 MPH down a 35?

Sounds fair for vehicular manslaughter. I would have given him more.

A bit excessive, but I have no real opinion. He could've killed some innocent people. But it is those kids' fault that they weren't wearing seat belts. Community service would work better. The emotional pain is where the real pain is.

A good kid? Good kids don't speed down a road that says go 35 mph. Good kids don't hang w/ people that don't wear seatbelts (or do they...}. This obviously wan't a good kid. He got what he deserves.
