(CNN) -- Four middle school students caught on camera verbally abusing their bus monitor have been suspended for a year and will be required to complete 50 hours of community service, school district officials said Friday.

Recorded by a student with a cell phone camera on what was the second-to-last day of school, the brazen bullying went viral and spurred international outrage.

The incident occurred in Greece, New York, near Rochester.

"Following individual meetings this week with school and district administrators, each family waived their right to a hearing and agreed to one-year suspensions from school and regular bus transportation," the Greece Central School District said in a statement.

Thoughts? Honestly I think they deserve it.

Good! I still think the one who was talking about cutting her should be expelled though...and all of them need to get the crap beat out of them, but I guess that can't be officially administered. >.>

Good. The punishment fits the crime. Now they can feel the shame of being held back a year because they were monsters, just like they tried to shame that lady.

Unfortunately, I doubt they'll be held back. Their parents will just put them in a new school. This was essentially expelling them without actually doing so.

They aren't getting held back a year. They go to a "Reengagement Center" to get their education instead.

Their parents won't let them forget what they've done. That's a plus in my book.

One would think but I don't even know there. I know one of the parents was saying his kid had already "suffered" enough. Remember, these are today's parents we're talking about. A stern talking to is considered child abuse.

It's a suspension from attending the district school and a suspension from the bus. They have to go to an alternate "Reengagement Center" for a year and they have to provide their own transportation.

Yeah, the touchy feely people have really ingrained themselves into parenting and what happens nowadays are a direct result of it. Parents no longer want to take responsibility for their kids as well as their kids actions. Maybe the judge should sentence the parents to community service along side their kids.

Good, I would never have treated an elder like that when I was a kid. And I can tell you, my bus driver was mean as hell and would stop the bus and put kids in their place if they acted up.

Meanwhile, the fundraiser that was set up to raise $5,000 for a vacation for her is closing in on $700,000 with three weeks to go... Not a bad tradeoff.

I'm for some sort of punishment... but a year? :? These idiots 'need' an education, maybe detention for a year to keep them at the school learning.

Hopefully it was a suspension from the district and not just the school. That would be a fitting punishment to the parents also.

People don't teach their kids respect anymore. I couldn't imagine speaking to an elderly lady like that. And if I did, my parent would have put me six feet under.

That's a start. I still say a lawsuit would have been better served. Knock some sense into the little brats. I think going after the parents would have also been a service to humanity. It's obvious the parents failed in their duty to raise their children.

No, no school district, you got it all wrong. You're supposed to educate troubled children not suspend them!! Seriously though. this type of behavior, while harmful and detestable, isn't THAT uncommon among this age group. A lot of nasty adolescents grow up to be pretty decent adults. Anyways, a few of them might actually be pretty good kids, but are just trying to fit in. Fitting in is everything at that age.

Yep I think those kids deserve to be punished, serves them right. Also, just to add, I think hitting kids constantly when they are acting good and doing nothing wrong is wrong, however, what I don't get is why its still wrong and society frowns upon giving your kid or kids at least one good smack upside the head when he or she is clearly being an arrogant idiotic brat all the time.

I think this goes for any school they try to attend, they cannot hide this. Judge orders will make this impossible to avoid,
