Alternative rock: The Cure, Radiohead, The strokes, The smashing pumpkins, The Killers, Kings of Leon, Muse, Joy division, Nirvana, Alice in chains, Death cab for cutie, Kill hannah, Arctic Monkeys, U2, Red Hot Chilli peppers. Metal:Opeth,Megadeth,Black Sabbath, Iron maiden, Syphony X, Porcupine tree all i can think of right now

Alkaline Trio's first album "Goddamnit" is a really good album with only 1 song that I don't really like, if you're looking for a punk rock/rock-pop style album.

I'd recommend Incubus (rock), Kamelot, Angra, Falconer and Blind Guardian (power metal) and Apocalyptica, Nightwish and Globus (symphonic metal/rock).

There are many great bands, it dosn't take much to find them. You really need to be more specific than just rock though, otheriwse you will just end up with a massive list of bands you will never get through. It's too overwhelming.

Ignoring that, and seeinghow no one else will mention them, Focus :P.
