what is the point of a laugh track? To tell you when to laugh or to confirm a joke is funny? imagine if shows like south park or futurama had a laugh track, it would suck. Laugh tracks are so stupid, I see no point in them at all.

I agree....they ruin certain shows....

After watching tv shows with no laugh tracks, then watching the same show with laugh tracks...is awful, it just bothers me through the entire show, making it so I cant even enjoy it..

Arrested Development is another great show that is sans canned laughter. That show would be really unfunny if it had the laughter added.

The idea is that laughter is contagious. When something happens on a show and there's a burst of laughter, it may make the viewer think "Hey that's funny!", and they'll start to laugh too. This of course is not the case for everyone. That 70's show has possibly the most overused laugh track button of any show I have ever watched and I have never laughed once. They'll put laughter after ANYTHING and it's really annoying. Someone could say something as mundane as they hate school and it will instantly be followed with HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA!!!!!!!   Yeah, I don't like that show.

It depends on the show... SNL and MADtv are better with laugh tracks, while the Simpsons, The Office and the like are better without them. :)

I hate laugh tracks. :( I should not be prompted to laugh because I'm supposed to think a piece of dialogue is funny. If I have to be told when to laugh... the writer is doing his job!

Ah, the laugh track...the staple of the 70's and '80's sitcom. Thank God not too many comedies use this anymore.

The tracks give the show so much more MEANING! They are like a show in themselves. Especially when they repeat the same ones over and over again. It makes me smile :)

i cant actually think of a show like SNL or stuff without laugh tracks i mean, without them the show would actually sound lonely...

but in shows like the office, scrubs, everybody hates chris (:O my fav show hahaha) and other stuff laugh tracks would be weird, cuz its bout ppl living their own lives, so obviously they wont look at the camera with something funny, and yeah that 70's show sucks... its like a tv-novel or a girl show and its not funny at all... not for me

and havent you noticed SNL always starts the show introduction with stuff about politics??? its getting annoying, and its not so funny

You think that's bad? How about a video game with a laugh track? Yep, try out any Scooby Doo game, they all have laugh tracks, it makes the game funnier in a bad way. Everytime Scooby goes "Scoobyroobyroo" the laugh track goes "HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH*CLAP**CLAP*HAHAHAHAHA" and I just crack up cause it's so stupid.

I remember when I was little in the 90's one channel would show Scooby Doo re-runs with the laugh tracks and the other one showed editied versions that didnt have the laugh track. I still have the non-laugh track episodes on tape somewhere in my house.

well with the early decades of TV audiences weren't use to being entertained by themselves, and still craved that social aspect in their TV left over from film, and theater. As technology got better they could film in a studio, and drop the canned laughter for a "live" audience. Now we are 3 generations in on people that grew up w/ TV and no longer need that social aspet, and actually find it a bit distracting.

There are those that don't need to be told (signaled) when to laugh... but there are also those people that do need to be told when to laugh. And yeah, laughter is contagious. Over the years, I've learned to deal with thelaugh tracks though.

yeah, its pretty much to tell you when to laugh

sometimes you hear a character make a joke, but actually that joke was just a build up for the next joke.. and THATS when they cue the laugh, why not laugh at the first joke? coz you werent supposed to

So people can tell it's a comedy. You'd be surprised how many people can't tell, especially with mokumentaries.
