Imo those two bands cannot be compared because a)it doesn't matter because they are both great influences b) they had a somewhat different musical orientation and sound.

But if we're talking merely preferences, then I prefer Led Zeppelin (and ignore the previous par) :)

Wow... This is a music poll I actually have to think about!
I love the both of them. But I'm going to have to give the edge to Pink Floyd.

Dogs + Shine on You Crazy Diamond + Welcome to the Machine + Time + Comfortably Numb + Brain Damage = better than ever Led Zeppelin song I have on my iPod. Srsly.

2 of my most favorite bands. Just don't think that stairway to heavens guitar solo is the best guitar work Jimmy Page has to offer. Hell, alot of live solos of stairway are more articulate and longer. If you want to hear Jimmy at his best listen to anything live from Zeppelin 68'-73. When they played live, they didn't just try to recreate the sound of their studio work, like Pink Floyd, they added entire new sections on to songs. Dazed and Confused could go on for as long as 45 minutes, including improvised blues jams and a bow solo. Bonham was way ahead of his time when he played. Just listen to immigrant song live or achilles last stand. Plus Moby Dick, may i say more? 68' through 72 no one could touch Plant's voice. He wailed when necessary and sung the blues like no one else could. Then theres Jones. Listen to the bass on The song remains the same and The lemon song,or the keyboards on Thank You, In The Light, and The Rain Song. He was also brilliant with the mandolin in such songs as Thats The way and Going to California. One last thing to point out, what other bands besides zep covered as many genres of music? At its core they are a blues band, but the adapted styles such as funk( trampled under foor) Reggae (D'yer Mak'er) Eastern (Kasmir, Four sticks), folk, bluegrass, love, and motown. Don't get me wrong, Pink Floyd is a amzing band, there songs are amazing and it amazes me how they could write it, but those are the reasons i think Zeppelin has the edge.

First of all, I'm 15 years old, so their music is relatively new to me (I have listen to most of their songs/ albums though). They are my two favorite 70's bands. I can't choose for myself which one I like more. Whenever I start thinking I like one, I listen to the other and can't decide. Pink Floyd has 3 of my favorite albums of all time (Dark Side of the Moon, Wish You Were Here, The Wall), while Led Zeppelin's 4th album is equalling amazing. As for individual songs, LZ has more that I listen too, and I think Robert Plant's voice is better. However, PF's orchestrated sound is a contrast to LZ's rawer tone, and even the long sections of their albums where there are no lyrics is breathtaking. Overall, I was just wondering who you thought was a better band and why.

Lebbin

Neither of them is really "better" than the other. They both made great music and both had their own strengths. Threads/polls like this should be written: Which band do you prefer? - A or B. Not, "Which band is better?". In this case, it ultimately depends upon your own tastes.

i see a lot of kids at my high school wearing zeppelin shirts, though i dont see as many pink floyd shirts. im 16 and i realize that those old bands are way better then the crap that comes out today. today they are all so unoriginal and all the bands sound the same.

Thats really only the mainstream $#!%, the underground is alive and well.

This. People need to understand that while the level of innovation isn't the same as it was back then when music was blossoming, the quality level is just as solid as back then. It's just harder to find the good stuff with so much crap piled on top of it. it's there if you want to get your fingers dirty though.

I've got to say Pink Floyd. I like Led Zeppelin, but one of my favorite songs is Wish You Were Here, In my opinion that's one of their greatest songs, the first one I heard from them.

But seriously... both are great bands. I'd just have to give the edge to Pink Floyd on account of the fact that a number of my favorite songs ever (Comfortably Numb, Sorrow, Run Like Hell, Wish You Were Here) were made by them, whereas I've always liked Led Zeppelin but never to the point of calling them the best band ever.

And Comfortably Numb's guitar solo pwns Stairway to Heaven's. :P

Pink Floyd, I have their Live Pulse CD and its amazing. It took me forever to get into them but for some reason I heard one of there songs on the radio (Us and Them) after seen Quantum of Solace and for some reason it just clicked and I've been listening to them ever sense. I get a weird floaty sensation while listening to them.

Yea my favorite band is Floyd, so obviously I go with them.

Besides the big 3 albums everyone likes it seems (Wall, DSOTM, WYWH) Meddle and Animals are also VERY good albums (Sheep at 10mins and echoes at 23.5mins are amazing songs, but very long obv.)

Don't get me wrong I def like Zep as well, but Floyd is too good. Floyd has better albums, more notable singles (comfortably numb and us and them are as good of singles as anything Zep has) and just overall has a better sound to it.

If you're not big into metal, need not worry. There's something for everyone out there if they look hard enough(or if someone's willing to look for them;) )

Now, before I list off any bands, realize that (A) none of these bands are Led Zeppelin or Pink Floyd. If Zeppelin is your favourite band, don't expect this stuff to be "as good" because frankly you've already got a disposition set on it. Keep an open mind is all I ask. (B) these are just bands off the top of my head that I know my friends who like Zeppelin havr responded well to. This might not be the case with you eventually, but I'll just be playing the odds here. I'll be posting Youtube links because you mentioned iTunes previews, and I don't like those 20 second previews at all. These showcase the full song, because songs progress.

So, anywho. you like Zeppelin. You MIGHT like:

-Black Mountain:

These guys are from western Canada and they're one of the better psych-rock revivalist bands out there. They've got a good range to their sound, and they definitely explore it. They take a lot from the ****c rock mainstays, but they don't take that influence and crap it out. They instead take those influences and apply them to their sound and their songwriting, and it makes for a fresh take on an old sound.

Wucan
Queens Will Play
Tyrants (my favourite track of theirs)
Stay Free
Stormy High
Angels
Druganaut

-Spoon:

Spoon is often called a basic rock band, but they really tend to go off on a tangent sometimes and it results in a lot of really varied songs. You could have one song reminiscing Queen, and another that's recalling old school funk/soul. They've got a relatively deep catalogue out and they're very consistent with the level of their songwriting.

My Mathematical Mind
I Summon You
The underdog
Jonathan Fisk
I Turn My Camera On
You Got Yr Cherry Bomb
The Ghost of You Lingers

-Wolf Parade:

These guys are fronted by two especially talented songwriters, and backed by an incredible synthesist, a drummer and a bassist/guitarist/percussionist.All of which are quite talented. I feel they're still in their growing phase as a band(they're relatively new), but that doesn't mean what they've done so far isn't great. :)

Language City
I'll Believe In Anything
Dear Sons and Daughters of Hungry Ghosts
Shine a Light
Kissing the Beehive
This Heart's on Fire

-My Morning Jacket:

A hybrid Rock/R&B/Folk band(don't let that throw you off, I mean R&B as in Rhythm and BLUES) from southern USA, they've received a bit of hype and popularity due to some high profile performances on talk-shows and SNL.

Lay Low
Gideon
Dondante
One Big Holiday
Highly Suspicious
Touch Me I'm Going To Scream Part 2

Now, I know that's a lot of music to sit through and test out, but you can't make an accurate judement on a band after 2 songs. Heck, I figure if you haven't listened to one of their albums straight through, it's hard to have a real opinion of a band. But still, here's a bunch of stuff for you to check out(or for anyone to check out).

Pink Floyd, handily. Led Zeppelin is still rather good though. Why? Breadth of style I guess. I'm also a sucker for skillful use of sampling and synthesizers it seems.

As much as I resent both being adopted by Yank Rednecks as classic standards that they will forever live their lives by, my vote goes to Zep for pure technical musicality. Floyd were always too pretentious for their own good.

Albeit, I do own shares in a hotel with one of the Floyd's- I forget which.

I always wonder how pretentiousness can be applied to musicians unless they talk themselves up(examples: Oasis, The killers, etc.) and claim importance greater than their music would allow. I'm not much of a music historian, so maybe the Floyd folk did practice the kind of arrogance that can bestow upon them the label of "pretentious", but it seems that most people I've talked to over the past years tend to claim the music as the reason for such labeling. This is what I don't get, because I find that this is where people mix up ambition with inferred importance. I've heard Radiohead, Godspeed You! Black Emperor, Max Richter, Tom Waits, and others called pretentious and the best answer I've ever gotten was that "they're trying too hard." Care to explain? I'm not saying PF aren't pretentious, I've just never known anyone to give a logical explanation as to why they give bands/artists that label.

I don't necessarily have a definitive answer, or any answer at all, but Led Zep always seemed more down-to-earth with riffs that I could relate to, as a guitarist myself. Zep just seemed to "rock" without trying to be more than they were. That's how I saw it, and still see it.

I guess that makes sense. Also shines a light on why a lot of people I know thing prog-rock is pretentious. It's harder to relate to, maybe? Doesn't seem as natural? Anywho, I agree Zepp were very earth-bound in their sound. PF were very "airy" with all their reverb and echo and distortion. "Us and Them" comes to mind.

IV is my favorite album of their's. It has most of my favorite songs from them on it. Houses of the Holy is also great too. D'yer Mak'er is one of my favorite songs. Also, after reading through the thread, i'm leaning to Pink Floyd as the band i prefer more.

I think that Pink Floyd has more good songs, but that the best Led Zeppelin songs are better than the best Pink Floyd song. I guess I'll have to go with Led Zeppelin.

Pink Floyd. Time, Have a Cigar, Wish You Were Here, Run Like Hell, the list goes on.
